Browse Forums Flooring & Floor Covering 1 Jun 03, 2009 9:31 pm Oh god here we go again. We ( me and the darling missus) went out this arvo to check out the tiles that we spotted in the display home that we looked at over the weekend. as it turned out the girl that worked at the tile place knew the exact tiles that we were looking for cos she knew the display home cos her dad painted the place. ( ya gotta love Perth eh. everyone knows everyone so you cant slag anyone off. lol). So she took us straight to the tiles. Ok here's the ducks guts of the matter. The tiles worked out at $125 a square metre but she was able to get it down to $105 square metre. I woulda choked om my drink if I woulda had one. Well the tiles are flash so it's kinda to be expected to be pricey. We asked for a guesstimate on what laying costs would be and the girl reckoned about $70 a square meter. This has kinda put a dampener on the tile floor as it works out just as expensive as the solid timber floor we were looking at getting. The question is " is this a fair price for getting floor tiles laid or are we getting done over at this price for laying??" If we are getting done then whats a ballpark figure to get them laid ?? Does the size of the tiles make a difference to the price of getting them laid. These tiles are 600mm x 600mm tiles so theres not too many tiles to the square metre. Thanks everyone Cheers Roger Re: Aaarrrggghhh help 2Jun 04, 2009 11:30 am I was originally going to go with porcelain tiles too. The 600 x600. They are beautiful those large tiles. Our estimate for laying costs were also $70sqm. Apparently its a lot harder to lay the larger tiles as its harder to get them flush. Also keep in mind that the larger tiles may also require floor leveling ( dependant on the slab) which will also add extra cost if they need to do grinding or levelling compounds. Another option you have is, ask the tiler that will be doing wet areas if he will come back after handover and do a cash Job on the main floors. Maybe cheaper??? We ended up chosing the floorboards. It worked out about $2000 cheaper in the end.!!! Living in Caloundra Thread****** Lovin my house all finished!!! At that laying rate it works out the same costing as the timber floor we were thinking about. It was the dutchman in me that hoped tiles might have worked out slightly a bit cheaper than the timber. Nothing like being an ambitious tightwad eh. Lol I'm just trying to curb the horrific cost over-runs where I can Something that I have noticed is that rates and prices seem to vary depending in which state everybody is in. I'm not to sure which state your in. We are not doing the wet areas as our bathrooms are pretty good at the moment and this tiling encompases the kitchen as well. So this is really the only major tiling job except for a small bit in the laundry. cheers Roger Re: Aaarrrggghhh help 4Jun 04, 2009 5:19 pm Your right, Prices vary dramatically. I had gone to several stores Im in QLD . Amber, Beaumont, concept tiles and majer tiles. Every place came up with a different quote for laying. They averaged $70 ( which isnt what you want to hear ). Some places only $40 some places $90. Were the prices you were given from the tiling store?? Have you contacted the actual tilers?? That might be your next step????? Any friends or people in your area recently had tiling done? maybe asked them who they used and what their costs were. Ask the tilers if they will do cash rates??? The price was from the tiling supplier. I had one mate volunteer to do the job after he heard the going rate but he's never done it before so I'm not going near that offer. lol Over the years I managed to develop contacts in most trades but tiling aint one of them mellybuilding Every place came up with a different quote for laying. Lol I think your laughing at me. lol no no no It is very steep though. its crazy that the cost of laying is often more that the tile itself. I've bought a house 2 and a bit years ago and last year we had some major water damage on a converted pergola area… 0 7925 Yes, unless you are in a low intensity rainfall area or the area is protected from rain. Do you have access to NCC Part 2 or can you download it? I can email you a copy… 10 12462 Thankyou so much 😀 I've decided on White on white for doors and trims, White on white 50% on ceiling and Mt buller for walls. Fingers crossed it will look OK 😀 2 7143 |
