Browse Forums Flooring & Floor Covering 1 May 18, 2009 7:01 pm I have polished porcelain tiles. Just moved in this weekend and noticed that the tiles look blotchy like hazy. ( you have to look hard though) I dont know what the cleaners cleaned them with and I havnt touched them yet myself, was going to try and buff them up with metho in water. I read about hazy tiles on other posts, when I picked mine I did all the tests and they come through them alright, but I am wondering now is this because of the wax on them? I also got down close to them and noticed fine scratches but when the tiler was laying them he showed me with a key that they wont scratch Can this haze be cleaned off and what can I use? Am I panicking for nothing as theres still abit of dust ect around will it take a few washes for things to settle down, or should I give the tiler or supplier a ring? OH Gowd I hope I havnt stuffed up and got bad tiles Know where your going in life............... you may already be there Re: Tiles look hazy 2May 18, 2009 7:06 pm Taffy, are these floor tiles? We are getting the same sort of tiles and I havn't heard of this so I will be watching this post wit interest. Maybe it's a haze of grout? www.themaxbuild.blogspot.com forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.php?f=31&t=20717&start=300 www.leahspaperpassion.blogspot.com Re: Tiles look hazy 3May 18, 2009 7:21 pm Yes its on the floor tiles I have the same ones on the wall havnt checked them. I dont know if its just the lighting and if I am just picking up the fleck in them or if theres something wrong. If you stand back and look accross them you can see it. It looks like water marks tiny splashes. It will drive me crazy if I cant get it off This was something I read about on here earlier and was put of having them but I changed my mind and went with them. Hope I dont regret it! When people come they just see the overall effect of the tiles and say they look great, its only when you look in depth at them you notice it, I hope too they wont scratch easily. They were factory sealed ones I got too. I will have another look tomorow in natural light and see if they look ok then. I will be buying some metho tomorow Know where your going in life............... you may already be there Re: Tiles look hazy 4May 18, 2009 9:33 pm We have polished porcelain floor tiles here, the tiles came sealed. So the actual tile was not hazy I think, but when the grout is applied and spreads a bit on to the tile, it gives that cloudy and hazy look. Pain to get cleaned.. you will need to mop MANY times!! It will probably be hazy because of the grout appilcation, but as our tiles were pre sealed, yours may be different. Built the Atlantique 37 Mk2 with Carlisle Homes - WE'RE IN!! Suggest you get some dry cotton wool and wipe it across the tiles in the affected areas. If strands of the cotton wool catch and drag as you wipe across the tile, it probably indicates a contamination on the tile surface. This is most likely grout residue (haze). Let me know the outcome! Ash. Re: Tiles look hazy 7Jun 10, 2009 8:26 am Thanks royalblue. I tried what you said and it didnt happen. I have spoken to grout perfect in the caution porcelain tile thread. I think my problem is either what they call China haze or maybe some sealer or something has penetrated into the pores of the tiles and left this blemish. The Rep sent me some stuff to clean them with but nothing happened, I am now waiting for him to come down and have a look. I took a sample tile back to the shop as it was on there too and It was only one area in the shop where we moved the tile too that we could pick this haze up, thats why I didnt notice it until it was layed. I dont know what they are going to do or if they can do anything about it. I am not very happy as they shop said they dont deal in cheap imports when I mentioned my concerns about possible china haze on porcelain tiles, and they said my tiles came from spain. We also looked at another tile in the shop from the same company and it was on that too! then we looked at an Italian tile and I couldnt see any on that, so maybe its a sealant problem from this supplier or its that the tiles were not polished properly from this company. I am no expert so I will not do anything until the rep has seem them. I will let you know how I get on Know where your going in life............... you may already be there Re: Tiles look hazy 8Jun 10, 2009 10:25 am ok Taffy, You're probably right, in that it seems to be a prob with the tiles. One thing though... you say they gave you some stuff that you 'tried' but didn't work. Chances are, it was an acid product. These are not designed as a 'spray on wipe off' product, and require a little dwell time to work. Suggest you try applying it to one of the worst tiles only (as concentrated as label suggests) and let it sit for 10-15 minutes (but no more). Then blot up, and rinse well with plenty of water & dry. See if this makes any difference. I'm no expert about tiles, but from what I've heard, you can get excellent tiles from China as well as Italy, Spain, wherever. And problematic ones as well. A little too much is made of tiles being from a certain place being problematic. Hope you get a solution here! Ash. Re: Tiles look hazy 9Jun 10, 2009 6:43 pm The stuff they sent me was alkaline based I think, but I must admit I didnt leave it on for a while. On one tile I scrubbed hard up and down and I think I used undiluted vinegar and I think it has done something, but I cant remember It would be jiff vinegar or metho Maybe an acid thing would work rather than a alkaline one I will wait and see what the rep says.
