Browse Forums Flooring & Floor Covering 1 May 07, 2009 11:57 pm Hello everyone, I've got a question. What do you know about tiling the whole area including the vanity unit, I wonder if it is a good idea to tile up everywhere then the vanity units come in and are installed, or after the vanity unit is put then starting on tiling. I am really confused as to what to do here. If we also tile up the place where the vanity unit is placed, isn't it going to be waste of tile and money? Cause if we open up the door of the cabinet we can't see the cabinet from inside of the cabinet. So what is the advantage of tiling the whole bathroom or powder room except for that it will be easier in the future to replace vanity unit if needed ? cheers, Re: Tiling before or after the vanity unit 3May 12, 2009 1:58 pm We had our bathroom renovated last year and didn't tile under the vanity unit as it sits in a recess in the wall. As you say, you can't see under it anyway. The gap between the tiles and front face of the cabinet was sealed with silicon (same colour as tile grout). But in our other bathroom the vanity just sits on the tiles and was the last thing to go in, along with the showerscreen, when all tiling and painting was finished. I'd think the advantages of tiling under the vanity is you can let the tiler get all their work done before you install the vanity, rather than having the vanity in there first (and risk it being damaged perhaps). I suppose having tiles under your cabinet provides an extra layer of water proofing too, should the plumbing in the vanity every leak. That's about all I can think of..! I wish B***y project home builders install the vanities & kitchen cupboards & THEN tile the floors. I hate it!!! If you want to replace the vanity in years to come then you don't have to retile the entire bathroom floor because of the gap the old vanity has left...
