I have a fish tank and need to know if it will warp the floor? I know I have to watch the water, heheh might put some rubber down under the cabinet. thanks Re: timber laminated flooring 4Aug 22, 2009 10:02 pm thats a pretty big tank Fully.. Re: timber laminated flooring 9Aug 31, 2009 1:08 pm Does your cabinet support all the load on the four outside edges or does it have a base that will spread the weight evenly? I would put down a piece of marine ply under it anyway to help spread the load evenly. What is under the laminate? Slab? 120kg per item is a pretty subjective measure - I'm assuming that would mean 120kg spread over four legs - like a table or an armchair. I would imagine 500kg spread evenly over the 4'x2' base area would be less of a problem than a piano on castors. Hey KB, thanks for getting back to me, regarding the cabinet, Ive had it for ages so not really sure how it spreads the weight, though i think it might be supported as you stated on the outside edges, i haven't moved it since Ive had it, once i move it I'll see the marks on the carpet and have a better idea. Where abouts do i buy marine ply from? i Re: timber laminated flooring 11Aug 31, 2009 2:12 pm kb46 Does your cabinet support all the load on the four outside edges or does it have a base that will spread the weight evenly? Where abouts do i buy marine ply from? i should get that bigger than the stand itself I'm assuming? so you think it'll be okay then???? Does it have to be marine ply? is there other ply i could use? PS, yes concrete slab under the laminate Re: timber laminated flooring 12Aug 31, 2009 3:25 pm Try the Fish Tank Weight calculator here. I estimate (using average figures) your tank weighs around 623.44 Kg but you'd be able to get a more accurate figure by inputting the actual measurements. If your tank cabinet has a hollow base, you could spread the load by adding a wooden platform (8mm Marine Grade Ply should do the trick) to the outer edges. You can get marine ply from hardware stores or chandlers but any pre-treated, rot-proof timber should do the trick. In my experience, Laminate only has problems with point loads, as long as you spread the load you should have no problems as the material is already compressed. Thank you very much, that is one stress gone.lol You wouldnt have any idea what the rough cost of marine ply is would you? If not, no worries and thanks again Re: timber laminated flooring 14Aug 31, 2009 6:57 pm I dunno how much marine ply costs, but I know it's quite xxx-y compared with normal ply. But it's good where there's lotsa water! I just had a look at my tank - DH put 15mm ply under - it isn't marine grade, but I'm not sure what sort it is. Mine's only been in place for about 8 months but there hasn't been any ill-effects from water (and I'm not exactly careful with water changes). Before we moved here I had my tank & stand straight onto 300mm square floor tiles on slab with no dramas.
