Browse Forums Flooring & Floor Covering 1 Apr 25, 2009 7:37 am guys we are going to do some of the work ourselves after handover such as concreting driveway, flooring, cooling, etc. With flooring, does anyone know the cheapest way to get it done for both carpet and timber? Is it to buy the goods ourselves and give it to tradies or any other better way? T-F-build PS. Received our contract today from DFH. 2 month wait since submitting intial deposit. Re: FLOORING - The cheap way? 2Apr 25, 2009 7:57 am Wouldn't the tradies be carpenters and the like? They wouldn't specialise in laying carpet / timber flooring so I don't think that I would be jeopardising the money spent on the materials by getting just anyone to lay them. Timber flooring can be laid by novices (if they are the click or glue types - there are a few threads here where people have done their own timber) but carpet needs to be stretched into place using specialised equipment. I would think that it would be a better idea to either search your yellow pages or newspaper for carpet installers who work for themselves and then compare them to whatever the carpet store's layers quote is. Some things are worth waiting for. Re: FLOORING - The cheap way? 3Apr 25, 2009 9:36 am it would normally be cheaper to get it laid by a retailer laying wise anyway i work at a carpet shop bunnings have the same carpet for alot cheaper and it is good stuff but you would have too add the underlay which is about 20m long by 1800mm and it would cost you beyween 120-180 dollars it would be better to ring a layer out of phonebook they would charge 20-27 dollars a broadloom meter which is 3.66m x 1m to just lay it but they would get underlay alot cheaper 1.
