Browse Forums Flooring & Floor Covering 1 Apr 20, 2009 8:40 pm Hi everyone, We recently came across the option of bamboo flooring and was wondering if anyone has any feedback or comments on this option versus standard wooden floorboards? We would greatly appreciate any feedback. Apparantly the sales consultant told us that bamboo flooring was stronger than standard wooden floors (gave us a "stiletto rating!") which we were quite interested in as we have a lovely Labrador who would love to be able to come inside our new home without scratching it Building our dream home - H3nley Ascot 384 Painting done - electrical, alarm and tiling being completed!! viewtopic.php?f=31&t=17939 Re: Bamboo flooring - any good?? 2Apr 20, 2009 8:58 pm G'day Macca, Bamboo flooring (esp strandwoven) does have a high Janka rating. This number measures how much force is required to dent the floor using a small round steel ball. This rating helps to gauge stiletto resistance, dent resistance from falling heavy objects, etc. However, it does not equate to how easy/difficult it is to scratch the floor. Scratch resistance is a physical property of the SURFACE LAYER of the floor, not the substrate of the floor. Hope this makes sense. There are a number of bamboo discussions in the FLOORING discussion board. Chris Re: Bamboo flooring - any good?? 3Apr 21, 2009 10:40 am G'day Macca, We have bamboo flooring in what has become our investment property in East Gosford NSW. It's glued to the existing flooring of the upstairs area ie Lounge, Dining, Kitchen and hallway up to master bedroom. We love it, looks great and is very hard to dent, we have two small dogs that are quite active and never managed to scratch the surface. I did manage to do some light surface scratches by moving very heavy furniture without proper care but you would be hard pressed to find them if you didn't know where they are. I will attempt to upload a photo. Re: Bamboo flooring - any good?? 5Apr 22, 2009 10:25 am G'day idealist. Strandwoven - natural, semi gloss. Ended up costing $127/sqm laid plus $400 to sand as corners of the flooring sheets had curled up slightly due to weather. The installer did a fantastic job. www.styleplantation.com.au Re: Bamboo flooring - any good?? 6Apr 22, 2009 11:46 am We put down bamboo flooring in our new house. We are pretty happy with it. However, you should be aware that if the bamboo is exposed to direct sunlight, the colour will change over time. We were also told to avoid wetting the floor too much. Olivia Re: Bamboo flooring - any good?? 7Apr 22, 2009 12:00 pm Thanks Olivia, that actually scares me now considering we wanted to put bamboo flooring in the ktichen and family areas. We also have a lot of light coming into the house too ...hmm.. Is the light and wet thing only prone to bamboo flooring or is this the case with timber flooring too? It's just all too confusing! Building was another language - and now flooring is too! It's just all too confusing! Building was another language - and now flooring is too! I agree - it is just all too confusing! We put the bamboo flooring in the downstairs living room, entry foyer and study. Apart from the study, the other areas of the house are exposed to quite a bit of light. We have had the flooring down for 4 months and I am yet to see any colour change. To clean the bamboo flooring, I just used the vacuum cleaner with the right head on it, and only mop up spills. The flooring wasn't overly expensive, so if it needs to be replaced in 10 years, I won't be that upset. Olivia 9 24636 Thank you. Do I use timber floorboards for stairs or do people use timber treads? Or is both the same? 6 7235 Hi, I have had them in the past and the pros are: Versatile, i.e many different colours and styles to choose… 1 6846 |
