Browse Forums Flooring & Floor Covering 1 Apr 17, 2009 2:07 pm Well I thought I better get a wriggle on and start on the search for carpet! I went to Western Distributors first who had a huge range of nylon carpet, but not alot of wool carpets. The sales guy was really keen on trying to get me to buy an 80/20 wool mix that was being discontinued but I didn't really like the colour. I saw a Feltex 100% wool carpet there, but the guy wasn't really helpful with information/price on it, so I got my plans measured and went for a look elsewhere. I have approx 45lineal metres to carpet. All the bedrooms upstairs plus the formal lounge and study downstairs. I want a 100% wool carpet preferably in a twsit or loop pile, as I don't like the shading that occurs more predominately with a plush pile. I went to Williamstown Carpets who have been around the corner from me this whole time! I never noticed The couple in there were lovely, very helpful. They stock a huge range of great quality wool carpets - Cavalier Bremworth, Quest, WoolSet, Hycraft etc. In the end I narrowed it down to a Woolset 100% Wool carpet. In a twist pile. It retailed for $320/lineal metre, but the colour is being discontinued and it is now on sale for $240/lineal metre, fully installed with their top underlay. The carpet is so heavy and thick, the lady said it is top quality. The quote I got was around $10,400, however, they are going to come in and measure the house to be more exact. There are 2 colours I like, a lighter brown and a darker brown. I can't decided which I prefer, both seem to go equally as well with the tiles and floorboards so it is more just a taste decision. I have taken photos but they haven't turned out the best so I plan to go to the house and take some against the paint etc for a better idea. Will post those later First things first - Is this a good carpet? Is the price reasonable? I was a bit shocked at first I was hoping for about $8000 for 45lineal metres of wool carpet, but most of the carpets in both stores seemed about the same. Also which colour do you prefer? Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ In this pic the lighter choice is in the middle, the darker on the right, ignore the one at the top on the left...the little square is my tile, although it looks almost white in this pic! Not a good representation of colour Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ I know someone mentioned foam underlay was better - Western Distributors stock both the Dunlop Ultimate which was my initial choice and the Bridgestone Airstep Red/Blue, can't recall the exact name. But Williamstown Carpets only use the Bridgestone Airstep in red or blue and I'm not sure how this goes in term of underlay. I know Ash recommends The Bridgestone Airstep Prime but I'm not sure if this is the same thing. I was thinking of asking if I can use a different underlay if this wasn't good enough, but wasn't sure how I would go. My karma ran over your dogma Re: The search for Carpet 2Apr 17, 2009 2:16 pm Im not very good with carpet & underlay help.. But i like the darker one! Re: The search for Carpet 3Apr 17, 2009 2:20 pm If you are getting 100% wool I would go with the darker one to hide any marks, I like it better than the light anyway We looked at 100% wool at $350 plm so it sounds about right for a good quality wool carpet. We have chosen a 100% nylon now @ $240plm, it felt just as nice as the wool, which not many nylons did, and it was the perfect colour and stains can be removed easily. Re: The search for Carpet 4Apr 17, 2009 2:24 pm Bel, I think that's a really good price - and an excellent quality carpet, by the sounds, and looks of it! I honestly like both colours, and I think that either would go beautifully - with the tiles, and the floorboards. Maybe slightly darker is better with youg kids, and showing dirt...? But, I'd go with which one you love the best, as I really do think they are both fantastic! Solidarity, not solidity.......The Lexicon of Life Re: The search for Carpet 5Apr 17, 2009 2:32 pm Hey Bel, I like both colours but I am leaning more toward the lighter one but with kids the darker would suit. I have to say the only pre requisite I have for buying carpet this time around especially with a little one is a carpet that doesn't leave footprint marks when you step on it.......hard to describe but its like the pile all moves 1 way or another and you see the steps as it moves the carpet in a certain direction. Sorry if this makes no sense. I hated it as it looked so busy on the carpet when it wasn't vacuumed....I became ocd with walking ont he carpet. Re: The search for Carpet 6Apr 17, 2009 2:55 pm Looks like a great carpet bel, even better if it's on sale!! The colours are both gorgeous. I like the lighter one a bit better though. Don't know if you remember when I was choosing carpets, but I ended up choosing the lighter one out of the two colours I was looking at, and when it got laid, it actually looks a lot darker than just the sample on its own. So while I was a bit afraid of getting a light one that might stain, I ended up with actually a very medium coloured one, which I am very happy with. So for those reasons I prefer the lighter one. But they are both beautiful colours. Would love to see some pics of it next to your wall colour too... Re: The search for Carpet 7Apr 17, 2009 3:59 pm Thanks everyone - will get some better pics when I get into the house next I'm leaning towards the lighter one, but DH likes the darker one. I agree with darker better for kids, but like you Donuts I think the lighter on a large scale will darken up a bit too. Will keep this topic updated My karma ran over your dogma Re: The search for Carpet 8Apr 17, 2009 4:51 pm There is not really a huge difference in shade there. Spots will show up on either if you let them. If you like the lighter shade then choose it, because if it is a quality wool that it appears to be in the photo, you are going to have it for a long time. The carpet looks like it is a tight twist pile. looks like iyt might have been heat set with a kink in the yran every couple of centimetres to give it the pin dot look, which is good. It will limit the foot step marks that are common with light twist pile, and which drives some people (including me)nuts. However shading can still be a bit of an issue, but not as servere as a light twist. Synthetics can have the same problems with shading and foot steps. If you get any spots on it, then treat them with a WoolSafe Approved spotter to avoid the damage. There is a spot removal guide on the WoolSafe website that can help. Vacuum regularly, and don't be afraid to have them professionaly cleaned from time to time. Just make sure that when the time comes, you choose a WoolSafe Approved carpet cleaner as these guys have the experience and the training to deal with properly. It makes it easier to choose a carpet cleaner when they all say they are the best in thier adds. just check that they are genuine members by searching for them on the website as I have found a few carpet cleaners who are using the Woolsafe registered trade mark illegally. Enjoy your carpet. cheers Col Nation For information on caring for wool and other carpet and upholstery go to www.woolsafe.com.au Re: The search for Carpet 9Apr 17, 2009 5:33 pm I like the darker one Bel. Firstly for the reasons others have mentioned with littlies... but secondly, it's a more interesting colour. The lighter one has sort of been done to death, you see it everywhere... the darker one just looks more interesting to me. I leave you to fend for yourself, figure things out yourself. Terrence Malick Re: The search for Carpet 11Apr 17, 2009 7:51 pm Thanks again everyone! Thanks for the feedback Col - It's great to get an experts advice, and I'm glad you approve I don't like the shading either, the lady did mention it will get some but not a huge amount. I have walked across it a few times and can barely notice any shading. My mum and husband both like the dark, I like both but leaning towards lighter. Will make a proper decision when I see it next to my wall paint etc - couldn't get in today My karma ran over your dogma Re: The search for Carpet 14Apr 17, 2009 8:24 pm haywgl In all serious though, you are right, he deserves a win He got a win last week... at our expense... seriously though... I love the dark one... and wool is soooooooooo nice to walk on.. but I couldn't afford it.. Re: The search for Carpet 15Apr 17, 2009 8:26 pm haywgl Joles - Only the most expensive thing in the house - his refridgerated cooling!!! In all serious though, you are right, he deserves a win Re: The search for Carpet 16Apr 17, 2009 10:12 pm Both colours looks like they go nicely with your floor & tiles Bel....which probably doesn't help decide between the two The darker one doesn't look too dark...I don't think it would show bits on fluff etc like a dark chocolate carpet would. We also found with our carpet it looks darker in the bedrooms & lighter in the living area over a bigger space & where we have a lot of natural light. Have to agree that darker may be better with the kids, but I still went lighter (& won't admit to DH that darker might have been better ) Re: The search for Carpet 17Apr 18, 2009 10:49 am Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ This is the condition called Pile shading, , "Pooling" Watermarking or a number of other terms that I hear from time to time. . It is different to the footstep markings that leave little temporary indents in the carpet. This condition is permanent, and nothing can be done to prevent it, in this style of carpet. It is wool (although it would do it in a similar style nylon or other synthetic fibre carpet.) This is a very low twist carpet, called a velvet plush. It was a very expensive carpet laid in a 5 star hotel in Sydney. The higher twist rate piles tend to negate this effect to a certain extent. When they kink the yarn with a heat set treatment it helps it even more. A knit de-knit process helps even more. this is when they basically knit the yarn into a long tube and pass it over a heated pipe and then unknit it at the other end to leave a very kinked yarn. It gives a slightly textured effect and the yarn will not tend to be pushed to one side to give you the light and dark sections as in this image. cheers Col Nation For information on caring for wool and other carpet and upholstery go to www.woolsafe.com.au Re: The search for Carpet 18Apr 19, 2009 10:36 pm Hi Bel, I like both too. So no help there, sorry. I'd probably go for the lighter, especially if you have cats/dogs inside as darker carpet tends to show every bit of fluff. As far as the underlay goes, you can ring the makers of the carpet and ask what they recommend as the best underlay for that particular carpet. I did this to make sure I was getting the "right one". They recommended Bridgestone Prime so when I spoke to the store, I just told them that the carpet manufacturer had recommended the Prime, and they told me that was what they had quoted me on. So I was happy. Just makes it a bit easier I think, when you are not sure what/which is wrong/right Hope this helps Re: The search for Carpet 19Apr 20, 2009 7:56 am Thanks BP that does help, I will give them a call today I have to take the large samples back today and will speak with the couple at the store too. Who knew carpet shopping would be so confusing My karma ran over your dogma Re: The search for Carpet 20Apr 22, 2009 3:42 pm Have you made a decison on which carpet you are going to have as yet?? I am no help as I think that both of them are a nice colour...Am not looking forward to my turn when it comes around 1 11003 1 15753 they can, it's a fairly standard solution when the slab isn't recessed. the falls need to be in the main floor, if it hasn't been done then you need to ask them to redo… 4 6581 |
