Browse Forums Flooring & Floor Covering 1 Apr 15, 2009 1:41 pm Hello Home One Forum-ites,
It is Tazteks better half here !! For many years I have pined !! for a white timber floor. Please see the attached photo for my idea of a heavenly floor - many of you will disagree... but it is what I LOVE. We are currently renovating our home and the existing floorboards are terrible to say the least. We are in the process of ordering new floorboards (a very pale cream/white colour) which will be laid over the top of the old floorboards. Taztek has finally agreed to maybe!! consider painting our new floorboards white... But he has suggested we throw our ideas and concerns to the Home One forum. We have a white kitchen arriving this week and it has high gloss cupboard doors and we intend to fit mirrored splashbacks. Yes, I truly love the all white and mirrored look... and will add splashes of colour with paintings, artwork, rugs and furnishings. We are joyfully (me) begrudgingly (he) debating on the following finishes: Whitewash - ie a watered down look where the natural timber grain peaks through. Full (opaque) paint - as per the picture - but matt , sheen or gloss ??? I totally love the gloss look and that is my preference for our modern home. On the other hand if we were doing a beachy type home I would love the whitewash. Tazteks concerns are: We will have a modern glossy shiny white kitchen - will white floorboards detract from or add to the modern look? If yes or no, which finish - whitewash, full matt, full sheen or full gloss? Tazteks better half's concerns: NIL Happy with any of them but loving the white gloss!! Once we have made our floorboards' finish/paint choice... then we are faced with another choice. The floorboards we are about to order are the wider boards at 130 x 19. We both agree on the chunkier looking boards - yehh. We have been told that with the wider boards we need to top nail them. (as opposed to the narrower 90mm boards which can be silent nailed) Do we leave the nail holes exposed or fill them? Then our next dilemma is what products are best for painting and finishing floorboards? We have been advised that paving paint is a good option. Taztek even suggested that a marine paint might be OK??? Also we would need to put a finishing coat over the paint and I have read horror stories how some of them actually yellow. My gosh, the last thing we want is a yellowed white floor!! So please can anyone with any ideas or hints or suggestions please help us in our white floor dilemma. Plus I must note that any who reply in favour of Tazteks better halfs preferences will no doubt be held in high regard. But in fairness, those who have suggestions in opposition will also be valued... it will be extremely difficult living with Taztek if the result is a disaster. Being a no clue on floors gal... apart from what I think looks fantabulous... any tinsy winsy bit of info or help or advice will be greatly appreciated. BUT.... once I saw the pic I can totally understand why you love it. I really really like that. Gives a totally different look. personal pref: I like the wider boards and I would fill the nail holes and put the white gloss over the top. Would the gloss make it harder to keep clean?? smudge and feet marks could show easier in the sunlight I dont know about the white wash but by the sounds of it it might look a bit..... half finished. do you have a pic of what it looks like??? I dont think many houses could pull it off. But like you say, you have a full white kitchen with the mirrors I think it would give a clean fresh look. I was a little worried that I may be inundated with againsts. I have found a picture of what looks a little like whitewashing, it will give you an idea. With whitewashing you can water the paint down a little or a lot to get different effects. As you say, it is more of a half finished look, which can be great for the right home.. just not ours. Cheers and thanx heaps for the first vote "FOR" !!!! whitewash look.jpg Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Re: ANY HELP ON PAINTING FLOORBOARDS WILL BE GREATLY APPRECIATED 4Apr 15, 2009 2:45 pm taztek Hello Mellybuilding Thank goodness the first post is a positive for white floorboards. I think natural timber can look quite modern aswell. But I Give a big hands up for the white gloss now. I like it. You should attach a poll on this one too. I hope you have no kids, pets, people living with you who work outdoors etc and you will have to become one of those 'shoes off' houses. Also you would need to clean this floor every second day to keep it looking great. I would also research the stain resistant properties of the paint you use as if you spill red wine it could be a disaster. Having said all that - if you are willing to put the hard work in to keep it looking good, it looks great. Edit: Just had a thought - I don't know if resale is a concern but the white floor may put potential buyers off in the future Renovating a post-war house in Brisbane | On the first rung of the property ladder Re: ANY HELP ON PAINTING FLOORBOARDS WILL BE GREATLY APPRECIATED 6Apr 15, 2009 4:47 pm I think that the first pic is a great effect BUT would be very dependant upon ultra high ceilings as that house has... You say your current floorboards are terrible and you will be covering them? Why not do a test run with the white paint on these to see how it will look in your own home? After all you will be covering these old boards anyway. Buying new boards, having them laid and then painting them without knowing the outcome seems risky to me... How bad are your current boards? Have you considered having them repaired? I shudder to think that you may be covering lovely old boards that have so many years of character with new thin veneer stuff I reckon that old fllorboards with a high gloss (clear) finish looks amazing and helps "tie" an old house into the modern reno options around at the moment... Hi Reonsmakemeweary (i'm getting that way too). Thanks for all your advice. We do have high'ish ceilings at 2700mm and the main living area is 7mtrs by 6mtrs which includes a kitchen in the corner and floor to ceiling windows, so it will only tend to make this even 'spacier'. Our current flooring is a mix of 50 year old T&G, new patches of T&G where walls were moved and yellow tongue where we've extended. The original thought was for bamboo but that was superceded with whitewash. I like your idea of testing on the current floor tho. That'll be this weekends chore. (thanks... I think). There's no intention of 'veneer', our intention is full 19mm solid timber T&G. Briz Ms..... No ferrals, just too cats!! Point taken on re-sale tho... Thanks and cheers, The lesser half (Not). Well it sounds like you have the right space to achieve this effect. Our current flooring is a mix of 50 year old T&G, new patches of T&G where walls were moved and yellow tongue where we've extended. The original thought was for bamboo but that was superceded with whitewash. Sounds like you'll definately need new flooring then... I like your idea of testing on the current floor tho.
