Browse Forums Flooring & Floor Covering 1 Apr 13, 2009 8:06 am Hey folks, we will be having tiles on most of our living areas and wanted to understand what sealing the tile means. I've picked up bits and pieces like some tiles come pre-sealed, some tiles need to be sealed because they are pourous but what does sealing actually mean. Do we just buy a sealant and apply them to our tiles once they've been laid or is it something that the builder does? Re: Tile sealing question 2Apr 15, 2009 8:06 am It all depends on what tile you have as it is very rare that anyone should seal I tile we spend most of our time stripping sealers of tiles that should have never been sealed. Sealers were invented because the wrong stone or tile was used in the first place in saying that there are tiles that need sealing but again you purchased the wrong tile if it needs sealing. I know this will offend some people but it is the truth the only thing that needs sealing is grout and grout only. Also if you seal than keep in mind this will have to be re done every 2 years or so and all topical coating sealers will wear off under foot traffic and furniture marks low sheens are better. If any sealer is to be used go the natural look sealers (penertrating) if the surface is porous only. Sealers are cheap to put on but will cost thousands to strip off.
