Browse Forums Flooring & Floor Covering 1 Apr 07, 2009 1:34 pm Hi guys, I'm about to build a new house and since I'm going to get someone to do the flooring for me and think will go with tiles and carpet but not sure which have to get it done first. Is it the tiles or the carpet. And also If you guys could help me to get a professional tiler and carpeting with a good bargain price. Cheers, N_D Re: Which have to go first, Tile or Carpet? 2Apr 07, 2009 1:38 pm I'm no expert, but I'd say do the tiling first as it's a bit messy . . . you can always scrape carpet glue off tiles. . . Fowler's carpets in Narellan do pure wool carpet for about $80 a lineal metre (plus about $50 a lineal metre labour). . . choose from their floor stock for the best prices. Re: Which have to go first, Tile or Carpet? 3Apr 07, 2009 1:40 pm We have a tiler in the family so he will be doing our tiling. He said it was better if the tiling goes first, then the carpet can be butted up against the tiles. Unfortunately, this isn't an option for us as our builder won't let him in before handover and so the carpet will already be in. It's not impossible to do the tiles second, but ideally we've been told they should be first. Building a Wisdom Homes Impression 33 MkII http://lilypadintheponds.blogspot.com/ We have the keys! Re: Which have to go first, Tile or Carpet? 4Apr 07, 2009 1:40 pm I think our tiles went down first having said that we only got tiles to the wet areas, not sure if it would be a different sequence of events if we were getting them in the living areas (our boards in the living areas went down way before tiles or carpet). Re: Which have to go first, Tile or Carpet? 5Apr 07, 2009 1:49 pm Our tiles went down first, from what l was told (and what happened with us) carpet is one of the last things to go in cause of the risk of it getting dirty and it been harder to clean if it does! Re: Which have to go first, Tile or Carpet? 6Apr 07, 2009 1:49 pm I agree with the majority and think the tiles should go down first. I was just wondering how many square metres is a lineal metre? A lineal metre is measured in a straight line, regardless of the width. So with floor boards, you're paying per metre length of timber. Re: Which have to go first, Tile or Carpet? 12Apr 07, 2009 8:15 pm Tiles first, 1) It’s the messiest to be done so needs to be done first, the tiler will put an the tile angle on. Then your carpet will butt up next to that. I was just wondering how many square metres is a lineal metre? A lineal metre of carpet is always 1 metre long, but the width can vary . . . I've found it to be normally 3.6metres or 4metres. As far as I'm aware, carpet retailers will only sell in lineal metres, so if there's any wastage, you have to pay for it. Re: Which have to go first, Tile or Carpet? 17Apr 08, 2009 9:54 am Sorry to go offtopic for abit. We got a quote from our builder for Cat 1 carpet to about 110sqm2. They quoted us $3600 with underlay. I'm not sure whether I should just get the builder to put it in, or wait until handover. If there isnt much of a diff in price, we were thinking of just getting the builder to do it. We arent particular with quality carpet, as most of our living areas will be timber flooring. Any opinions? Idiots are fun, that's why there is one in every village! - Dr. House - Re: Which have to go first, Tile or Carpet? 18Apr 08, 2009 11:06 am Quote: Sorry to go offtopic for abit. Any opinions? Hi wonderland, We did our carpet our handover and it saved us a lot of money. With that price, you could get a better carpet, or if you go for the same carpet outside, you would save money. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Built the Nevada 42 Next project - landscaping! Any opinions? Take your plans into a carpet shop and tell them which areas you need carpetting, they'll be able to scale the plans (if they're not already to scale) and tell you how many lineal metres you need, then they can give you a price on the carpet that you choose instore. Re: Which have to go first, Tile or Carpet? 20Apr 08, 2009 12:38 pm Thanks guys for the info!! We only really want to spend $30-$35 per square metre, so we dont have a big budget for carpet.
