Re: What are you favourite timber floor species? 6Apr 05, 2009 9:02 pm I think Qld Spotted Gum is hard to beat as a floor. Blackbutt always looks good as well. For a red floor Jarrah and Red Mahogany are good. I tell people that are overwhelmed with the number of species that whatever they end up with, it will look good. Real timber floors always look good. Re: What are you favourite timber floor species? 7Apr 06, 2009 6:10 pm Just recently went floor hunting, at first the range seemed overwhelming, but after a few deep breaths the choices began to narrow down until my wife and I decided on ... marri. It's a West Australian timber, milled in the south west. Here's a pic - not my home, just a pic I copied off the 'net. I'm worried it would make the room dark and appear smaller!! If we dont go for Jarrah, then we will go with Sydney Blue Gum Idiots are fun, that's why there is one in every village! - Dr. House - Re: What are you favourite timber floor species? 11Apr 08, 2009 8:04 pm Sydney Blue Gum is reasonably dark especially with an oil-based finish. Remember it wil also darken with age Rose Gum (aka Flooded Gum) is similar to Sydney Blue Gum but lighter. Re: What are you favourite timber floor species? 12Apr 08, 2009 8:10 pm Flissfloss your floors are gorgeous! Congratulations Tasmanian Oak for us. It's a lovely light colour, though it doesn't have as good a Janka rating as some of the others. I thought that Sydney Blue Gum might be abit lighter than Jarrah. You know, as a compromise?! Thanks for the advice Luke, I will have to check out Rose gum. Also, would you know what the price different is between the three? Thanks Idiots are fun, that's why there is one in every village! - Dr. House - Re: What are you favourite timber floor species? 14Apr 08, 2009 9:39 pm Beautiful floors Flissfloss! My favourite one is Blackbutt as we want something light but do love some of the dark timbers too, just not for our place. Building a Wisdom Prosperity 23 - http://erwisdomprosperity.blogspot.com/ Re: What are you favourite timber floor species? 15Apr 09, 2009 7:19 pm Rose gum is fairly reasonable, at the moment you will pay around $55 sq. metre for 80mmx19mm select grade. The Blue gum will be lighter than the jarrah for sure. Jarrah will be the most exspensive out of the three, expect over $70 sq. metre for 80mm x 19mm select. One thing to keep in mind with jarrah is you will get no long lengths at all - around 3900mm would be the longest in most packs of flooring or decking. The packs will be heavy in lengths under 2400m. Re: What are you favourite timber floor species? 16Apr 09, 2009 8:10 pm Thanks Luke! We will most likely go for the 80mmx13mm ones, or are they 12mm? I cant remember, but I know we arent going for the 19mm coz it's too high as compared to our carpet/tiles. Yes I've read that Jarrah comes in shorter lengths. I'll most likely go for the Sydney Blue Gum, but I should check out showrooms first to make sure. I'm trying to finalise my timber selections and it would be really handy if I can get some details: 1) What is the thickness and width? 2) How is attached (on battens, plywood or direct stick)? 3) Want brand and grade of timber is it? 4) How much? So many questions I know, but it's o hard to get it right and you've done so well. That has been a long road for you I remember telling you about my flooring back when it was being laid, what, 6 months ago now? Whatever you decide I'm sure it will be great, maybe the most researched floor on H1? Engineering timber is certainly a less fuss option, times cheaper to supply and install and better withstands humidity. 1 15838 The most likely cause of your timber swelling (parquetry?) is either a plumbing leak or carelessly leaving water on floors after use or both.
