I rang up Hurford, they don't sell directly to public. Nash Timbers sells their timber in Sydney area. I don't know whether DS Prestige directly buy from Hurford or Nash though.
Clarity, I was going to ask you about this. You mentioned you get timber from Nash then use DS Prestige to install. Why didn't you let DS Prestige supply timber as well? Cheaper to buy from Nash?? Building Clarendon Brighton - Done and moved in Sept 2009 Re: How would you order and install your solid timber floor? 22Feb 26, 2009 10:12 am Jochicho Clarity We found different people have different opinions on things like ply v's battens - plastic v's painting on a water proof substance - letting timber 'acclimatise' v's not! With any profession this will happen, even DR's have different opinions on things!!! IMHO, go with who makes you comfortable and who you feel confident in! Hope this helps. HI Clarity, I have found the same, some swear by laying it on battens, some on ply... acclimatise for 2 weeks, for one, etc... Did you end up laying it on ply or battens? A few questions, I will answer based on our experience and opinion... We went with ply, as eho mentioned above it is more solid and it avoids the 'hallow' sound (I think that is right ) We have had NO creaking or hallow sound at all and are really love our floors... Re: How would you order and install your solid timber floor? 23Feb 26, 2009 10:15 am Jochicho I spoke to DS Floor coverings and he seems really nice and helpfull, he can also supply the wood, but how do I know where he gets it from? He mentioned that he does a lot of business with Northern Rivers Timbers but that he buys the timber directly from the mill... Someone should write a book about solid timber floors! DS Floors are great! Really nice and honest! I have learnt so much about floors and building in general, thankfully we can help others thru this forum Re: How would you order and install your solid timber floor? 24Feb 26, 2009 10:33 am eho Clarity, I was going to ask you about this. You mentioned you get timber from Nash then use DS Prestige to install. Why didn't you let DS Prestige supply timber as well? Cheaper to buy from Nash?? At the time we were ready to organise our flooring we were just about to order the 'boral engineered' floor and through some other peoples experience decided against it. Then we soon discovered that 'Spotted Gum' was very hard to get - anywhere!!! DH and I rang and visited so many different timber companies and flooring people. We'd first ask if they could supply the spotted gum for December, then the price. Nash were the first who offered the best value for money and were able to supply the timber. We were supplied 80% select grade and 20% standard. (Their installation cost was really high - more than the actual cost of the boards!!!) DS Floors was recommended to me by a couple of different suppliers for installation and for some reason they weren't on our list for suppliers! eho, I hope this answers you question... please feel free to ask more! Re: How would you order and install your solid timber floor? 26Feb 27, 2009 11:34 pm Thanks for all your info Clarity, you are a great help!
I think Ply is a better way to lay the timber too, but some places are just so against it is no funny. Oh well, you can't get everyone to agree, can you? The guy at DS Flooring sent me a quote today and it's reasonable, not as cheap as World of Timber but very good and detailed quote, he seems to know his stuff. Do I get it right Clarity that you first bought your timber and then contacted DS Flooring, hence why you didn't get the timber through him? Hey Eho, maybe if we both end up using DS Flooring we should ask him for a bulk discount, haha. I really don't like the engineered floor, my husband is the one that thinks is not that bad and more stable, etc... But I think I've convinced them that it's a no go. Thanks again for your help Clarity and Eho. Johchicho, I like your idea! I found a company selling blackbutt select 80x19mm for $69sqm (inc gst). It seems a good price considering other quotes are $74 or above. I am still at least 4 months away from completion of my house. The question is... If the price is good, should I buy now? Or, should I stay put and hunt for better bargains over the next few months? Do you think timber prices will go up over the next few months? Your experience is appreciated! We sourced our timber first. Good luck with deciding which type of floor to get! Re: How would you order and install your solid timber floor? 30Feb 28, 2009 6:04 pm eho I found a company selling blackbutt select 80x19mm for $69sqm (inc gst) Thats a really good price Re: How would you order and install your solid timber floor? 31Feb 28, 2009 11:14 pm Thanks Clarity once again! I think we'll go solid floors.
Now we just have to agree on 80mm vs 130mm (I like the wide boards best but hubby is worried that they might warp easier...) We are also starting to consider laying the floor ourselves and then getting DS flooring to sand and finish... It will certainly save us quite a bit of money but... Would they look ok? oh, so many decisions and we haven't even started building yet! Eho, where did you find those floorboards at that price? Northern Rivers Timber gave me this special and it has just expired on friday. (I mentioned this in my previous PM I believe this is just some sales tactic. If they still have them in stock, you can ask them too. In regards to 130mm boards, you may not be able to do secret nail. Sydney flooring says boral got some new products that allow secrete nails on 130mm boards, but sydney flooring do not even recommend them, go figure. Building Clarendon Brighton - Done and moved in Sept 2009 Re: How would you order and install your solid timber floor? 33Mar 01, 2009 9:05 am Thanks Eho, I think I remember about the special now... yeah, it must be a sales marketing scheme...
Yeah, that's the downside not being able to secret nail the 130mm because apparently Australian Standards/regulations force you to top nailing them, and I guess I agree with Sydney flooring (who seems to know what they are doing but their prices are just too high, got a quote on the mail the other day) but the good old floorboards all had top nailing and they still look beautiful.. Some showrooms have done a great job of the top nailing and some not as good, you really never know! They are also more expensive of course. I wonder what Boral has come up with for not top nailing the 130mm boards and what the regulations would have to say about that. Unforutnately I'm too far away from installing the floorboards so I can't buy the wood now, don't have were to store it! They sad they can store them till they are needed, but don't know if they have a limit. Building Clarendon Brighton - Done and moved in Sept 2009 Re: How would you order and install your solid timber floor? 36Mar 01, 2009 1:34 pm Beast Jochicho Oh Beast, please keep us updated! let us know how it comes up and all that. I have been meaning to contact Norhern Rivers timbers and get a quote, but I think I find it harder to also know who to use to lay them... Good luck and I hope they look great when they are finished.... Could we get some pics? No probs, I will keep you posted. I used an installer from another forum. He is doing a great job. Prices are here http://northernriverstimber.com.au/members/specials.php As promised here are some pics of my new Blackbutt floor. The photo's don't do them any justice (I need to brush up on my photography skills ). http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v51/MonaroCV8/floors017.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v51/MonaroCV8/floors016.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v51/MonaroCV8/floors018.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v51/MonaroCV8/floors013.jpg Re: How would you order and install your solid timber floor? 37Mar 01, 2009 5:58 pm There is now an approved method for secret nailing wide board floors (boards over 80mm finish width)
I secret nailed 108mm boards about 2 years ago in my house. The boards were also completely glued to the yellow-tongue base, the adhesive was screed in the same maner as tle adhesive. I've not had any problems whatsoever. The new Boral method is more or less the same as this though does incoporate a concealed clout as well for the 130mm boards. I'm not sure if they have changed the profile of the 130mm board to secret-nail or not - 60mm,80mm and 108mm boards are machined in a 'secret-nail' profile different to the 130mm,180mm and 220mm boards. Thanks for that info Dukemaya, I guess it's worth investigating, the only problem is that I think most layers won't be up to speed with this new technicque as most people we spoke to they still do top nail. Re: How would you order and install your solid timber floor? 40Mar 01, 2009 8:15 pm Jochicho Your floors look fantastic Beast, and the stairs and everything! Your layer/finisher has done a great job!
