Browse Forums Flooring & Floor Covering 1 Jan 29, 2009 5:30 pm Hi Guys
In our current (soon to be sold) townhouse we have some pretty ordinary carpet, I would say it is nylon, looks like a loop pile and it is a cream colour. We have it on the stairs and in all 3 bedrooms upstairs. We got it steamcleaned today and it has come up pretty good, although a few stains remain. 2 are cordial stains - one bright orange and one bright green - the guy said he could try spot treatment, although didn't have time today but could come back....anyone had this done on bad stains? Was it worth it? The other stain was found once we moved Kobe's cot out of our room and there was a rather large bleach stain under it We have no idea how it got there, the guy said there was nothing he could do for that. It is right in our master bedroom, with no way of putting anything over it to cover it as it is in a weird location. Is there any way we could add a colour dye to it to make it look less noticeable? I'm starting to think it might be worth ripping up the carpet and laying down some cheap stuff just to help with the sale...what do people think? Would this be worth it? Is this likely to put people off buying the house? Love some input My karma ran over your dogma Re: Carpet stains 2Jan 29, 2009 5:41 pm What’s under the carpet?
And no not the underlay, what’s the floor base. Ed - Hmm those look interesting - very cheap, like you said I don't want to spend money on something that probably won't get us much money back. It's a shame because the rest of the carpet has come up perfectly, and the cordial marks aren't really noticeable and can be covered with furniture. It is the bloody bleach stain (which annoys me because I have no idea how it got there!!!) that is annoying me, because I don't want to rip it all up and spend $5000 atleast just to get rid of 1 mark!!! My karma ran over your dogma Re: Carpet stains 6Jan 29, 2009 9:36 pm steveo247 how worn is the carpet ? if its not too worn. patch the stains. taking the carpet from cupboards and patching the stains and using the stained carpet to fill the cupboards back up is pretty popular. it shouldnt cost much. i normally charge $40 for the first one and 25 each one after that. cheaper if i know the people. you can do it even if its worn, just doesnt look as good. and you will see it, they will never be perfect becuase carpet from the cupboards has never been walked on. but sure looks alot better than a stain, and in time it will blend in alot better. there might be some carpet layers listed in the yellow pages etc, or just ring carpet shops. Re: Carpet stains 10Jan 29, 2009 10:06 pm Awesome! Thanks so much for the tip Steveo - you learn something new everyday
I'll get onto it ASAP, under $100 sounds much better than $6000 for new carpet The bleach stain would be the biggest i'd say maybe A4 size - the cordial stains are pretty small - like a bit bigger than a 50c piece.. My karma ran over your dogma Re: Carpet stains 13Jan 29, 2009 10:13 pm nah
was actually supposed to be there this week to go to the tennis with my sister and nan tho! but plans changed. but ring and get some quotes, tell them its a loop pile and what size the patches are. Re: Carpet stains 15Feb 02, 2009 6:13 pm Stains like you have are called acid dye stains. These can be dealt with by a good carpet cleaning operator who has the right knowledge skills and equipment.
Basically they have to de-colour the stains and if necessary spot dye the carpet back to the original colour. Even the bleach mark can be dealt with this way with out cutting the carpet or trying to find a matching piece. Not every carpet cleaner can do this as it is a specialist skill, but there are a few around Melbourne that can help you. I do this sort of work on the Sunshine Coast but you can find someone near you who may also be able to do this by jumping on www.woolsafe.com.au cheers Col Nation For information on caring for wool and other carpet and upholstery go to www.woolsafe.com.au Re: Carpet stains 16Feb 02, 2009 7:53 pm Thank-you for that information Col - is it an expensive exercise?
If it were carpet I was going to live with for a long time I would do it without question, however, we are selling the place so it isn't something I want to spend a fortune on either. Does it matter if the carpet isn't wool? My karma ran over your dogma Re: Carpet stains 17Feb 04, 2009 8:12 pm Spot dyeing only works with wool and some nylons. Most of the other fibres and some nylons are solution dyed and are more difficult to loose colour from bleaches. THe solution dyed fibres are less likely to loose colour from fading and bleaching.
Some silly sales people say that you can clean solution dyed carpets with bleach. This is just not necessary and I have seen plenty of Solution dyed carpets that have been permanently damaged by people trying to bleach out stains that would have easily cleaned out with nothing more than soda water or at the very least a few minutes for a professional carpet technician. Spot dyeing and dye stain removal can cost a few hundred dollars depending on area affected and what it takes to remove the acid dye stains. If the room of carpet is worth under $1500 then this is probably not a wise investment given your description of the problem. cheers Col Nation For information on caring for wool and other carpet and upholstery go to www.woolsafe.com.au Hi everyone, Have just put a shower in the laundry and after only using it 2-3 times have noticed staining on the grout.
