Browse Forums Flooring & Floor Covering 1 Jan 22, 2009 2:40 pm So our 1951 house has what must be the original lino kitchen tiles. DH has started chiselling the black adhesive used to stick them down (it is quite thick).
Has anyone else had experience getting this stuff off? How did you do it? As for getting it off - hard yakka - A shovel or sharp crowbar works well - I find a slightly rounded shovel enables you to only try to scrape off a 25mm sliver at a time. Those tiles were designed to never come off Re: Black gunk that holds lino tiles down - how can you remove? 3Jan 22, 2009 9:29 pm shoulda hired a stripper machine ! woulda been alot easier. but now that hes got that far its a bit late.
get a heat gun and heat the tiles up and get a paint scraper and they will come up in once piece. then get a 4" scraper and scrape the glue up ! not fun but works. scraper like this.. Have been grinding it off with a metal grinder, works really well! How can you tell if glue or tiles have asbestos in them? Re: Black gunk that holds lino tiles down - how can you remove? 5Jan 23, 2009 10:18 pm I've been thru that just recently... Bugger of a job!
What are you going to put on the floor? If you are polishing the floorboards the guy who sands the floor will knock it off in seconds. Re: Black gunk that holds lino tiles down - how can you remove? 6Jan 24, 2009 1:41 pm The guy who is polishing the floor is my husband!
He is doing it all. It's ok now. He has ground off 1/3 of the gunk, and will do the rest today. He is sanding the whole floor as we write. The only thing I'm worried about now is asbestos. I might go and do a search on the appearance of asbestos tiles. As you can see in the photo our kids have been running around the house! Re: Black gunk that holds lino tiles down - how can you remove? 7Jan 24, 2009 2:28 pm I found these photos of asbestos products
Scroll down for tiles. They look exactly like ours! http://www.heimer.com/photographs/asbestos.html Re: Black gunk that holds lino tiles down - how can you remove? 9Jan 27, 2009 4:03 pm I would get someone in to check the floor out, if it is asbestos, don’t go messing with it.
