Browse Forums Flooring & Floor Covering 1 Jan 17, 2009 8:42 pm Hi All,
We are looking at installing solid timber flooring. We received an interesting quote including: - 5mm Timber strip flooring, layed on 5mm ply anchored to slab. Can butt up close to skirts and run glue edge to remove the need for quadding. Benefit is also ends up height of carpet. What do you think? Is 5mm too thin? Apparently with 12mm or 19mm boards there is really only 5mm available to sand back anyway. Appreciate your thoughts.... Thanks. Re: Timber Floor - 5mm? 2Jan 17, 2009 8:44 pm I wouldnt classify 5mm as solid timber flooring. I would have through it may warp in time.
Second point silicon around skirting to prevent quad. I would not have thought that the type of gap (small) will be enough for expansion and contraction of the timber. Re: Timber Floor - 5mm? 5Jan 18, 2009 5:21 pm It sounds like timber veneers, they come in 5mm or sometimes 8mm thickness on top of plywood. they are able to be sanded and polished once or twice maximum in its lifetime. and they click together usually. Re: Timber Floor - 5mm? 6Jan 18, 2009 5:22 pm 5mm solid timber flooring? I cant say I have seen it before but I don't think I would want to because it just sounds cheap and nasty. Once it is sanded there wont be much timber left and basically it wouldn't be a 'solid timber floor'. Re: Timber Floor - 5mm? 8Jan 18, 2009 6:52 pm If it's floating on the slab like you indicated (ie not "direct stick" method), I would strongly discourage butting it to the skirt and glueing edge, coz the floor will expand/contract with temperature and with only 10mm thickness, floor will warp/bow or crack.
If boards do not have T/G, make sure that it has a click system that is strong. Chris Re: Timber Floor - 5mm? 11Feb 22, 2009 6:31 am What about using a solid Cypress Pine floor? We live in Queensland and are renovating a two storey brick home on cement slab. Existing downstairs flooring all needs to go (ugly vinyl) - we were thinking replacing with Karndean vinyl (karndean) or floating engineered floor (click together). Alternatively we can access Cypress Pine timber at a really good price (it will be finished but would need oil or varnish). As the floor is concrete I am guessing it would have to be glued down?? Any thoughts or suggestions on this? Is anyone using solid timber floors? Angie Re: Timber Floor - 5mm? 12Feb 22, 2009 11:17 am If it is a solid timber,it would generally be laid on directionally opposing batons on top of the slab.Much better idea than an engineered floating timber floor. And it would be "secret nailed" rather than glued. Just a carpet layer's opinion! Engineering timber is certainly a less fuss option, times cheaper to supply and install and better withstands humidity. 1 15904 The most likely cause of your timber swelling (parquetry?) is either a plumbing leak or carelessly leaving water on floors after use or both. Without seeing, i am ignoring… 1 3276 Thank you. Do I use timber floorboards for stairs or do people use timber treads? Or is both the same? 6 7271 |
