Browse Forums Flooring & Floor Covering 1 Jan 07, 2009 8:01 am When we retiled out house 6 years ago and chose cheap crappy tiles (we obviously didn't realised this at the time). We don't want to make the same mistake again. We have been led towards porcelin tiles which should be hard wearing, no chips etc.
We like the porcelin and like how it can be laid with a small grout line. We will be getting a matte finish after listening to friends complain about footprints and dust being too obvious. Our problem now is size. As you can see in the plan below the new room is a lovely open space (marked family) so we could have the 600 tiles through there, kitchen, dining and kids play area (marked living on plan). Our problem ****** with the entry and hallway. I think the 600 would be too big for this area. The hallway is 89cm wide. The lady at the tile shop suggested using the 300 down the hallway and the bigger tile everywhere else. Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ I think a 400 or 450 would be a perfect size but they don't come in porcelin, so do we go back to ceramic? Or the lady also suggested a glazed precelin as opposed to the vitrified. Oh it is all too confusing. We also lookeed at the 300x600 which would work well but I am worried about them going out of fashion quite quickly. Any thoughts, ideas or experiences would be appreciated. Sorry if it is waffle. I have two children around me with one pulling my sewing table apart - best go. Thanks in advance. Andrea Re: Size and quality of tiles 2Jan 09, 2009 7:27 am Hi Andrea
I would go with the glazed porcelain they are great if you really want the matt finish than they can cut them to fit into the gaps that are left after the 600 go in, it will still look good thats what we see the tilers do. The cut side will be up against the wall to hide the cut. When choosing a tile stay with a biege colour darker colours will show everything. Craig Re: Size and quality of tiles 3Jan 09, 2009 7:49 am Personally, I'm not a fan of the shiny ceramic tiles, to me they look like lino...check out some display homes (if you are in Melb a couple of displays have them - Rawden Hill in Marriott Waters for one I think) but just personal opinion.
The 300x600 porcelain tiles are brilliant, if I could afford them I'd definitely go for them. ICK So glad the building is over, never again. Loooove our house, but still not quite sure it was worth all of the stress they put us through! Re: Size and quality of tiles 4Jan 09, 2009 8:15 pm If I were you, I woul still use 600x600 on the entry and hallway.
I would probably ensure that the tile is centred along the hallway (and put small cuts of tile to the sides). YOu need a good tiler to do this job, if you are planning to mix 600x600 with 300x600. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Built the Nevada 42 Next project - landscaping! Re: Size and quality of tiles 5Jan 14, 2009 2:22 pm Oh you guys have me confused now. We were advised by the tiler to get 400 or 450. I know we could choose 300x600 but I was worried that they would be a trend that passed and we would be stuck with a look that was so 2008/09.
We found some lovely ceramic tiles that are 400, however they are a darker colour. We have had a light beige for the past 6 years and we are ready to add some colour! The light tiles show up a lot too, and with 2 young kids I am sweeping up so often anyway. Thanks for your ideas, will show my husband. Andrea Dear Members I have to decide the Facade column size.
