Browse Forums Flooring & Floor Covering 1 Dec 25, 2008 9:28 pm Hi,
We are building our new home and we have decided on a porcealin tile which is glazed and has a rectified edge, we are so confused whether we should purchase these tiles for $4000 and get them layed as we have read in a few forums that this form of tile seems to be a massive headache. Should we just choose a ceramic tile instead? Matt Re: Porcelain tile confusion 3Dec 25, 2008 9:37 pm I don't see any reason why porcelain tiles should cost any more to lay.
Now, if you're after 1.5 mm spacing or they are large format tiles then it would cost more to lay. Both of these are possible with porcelain tiles, but unless you get one of these it should cost the same. Demolition August 2009, Construction Started September 2009, Completed December 2010 Re: Porcelain tile confusion 4Dec 25, 2008 9:41 pm Hi Casa,
Thanks for your swift reply, the tile we have chose is 300x600 and we are happy with the standard grout gap as we have seen them layed in a display home and it looked like a 3-5mm gap... but I am no tiler thats why I am doing some research here.. as the last thing I want to do is purchase 150m2 of tiles to be told that wasnt a great decission. Matt Re: Porcelain tile confusion 5Dec 25, 2008 10:28 pm I've found that any tile over about 400x400 size will almost certainly be porcealin as ceramic tiles aren't strong enough in the larger sizes. So if you are after large tiles you probably don't have much choice. Rectified edges are good because I recently bought 450x450 porcealin tiles for $35 per meter without rectified edges and despite being made in Spain the size was very inconsistant and this made the gaps vary by up to 1.5mm. They cost $45 per meter to lay and did not need sealing.
Do you know where these tiles are made? Because $28 per meter for porcealin tiles with rectified edges is very cheap. Some of the very cheap tiles are made in China and have problems such as a tendency to stain very easily. If they require sealing this may add up to $25 per meter extra to the price. I'd think about grabing a sample and present it to tilers you are getting quotes from to see what they think of them and if they see any problems. I'd expect at least $50 per meter to lay as besides being porcealin many tilers find it hard to lay the big heavy tiles and will charge extra. Re: Porcelain tile confusion 6Dec 26, 2008 7:53 am My understanding is the reason rectified porcelain tiles cost more to lay is because of the preparation. The corners of these tiles need to sit as flush as possible with the adjacent tiles otherwise the corners can be sort of sharp underfoot.
Ceramic tiles with slightly rounded edges are a bit more forgiving in this way. The extra cost is the preparation of a perfectly level surface to lay rectified porcelain. Happy to be corrected if I'm wrong, but I'm pretty sure this is correct. In my opinion, the extra cost is worth it for the clean look the rectified porcelain provide once laid. Jo I leave you to fend for yourself, figure things out yourself. Terrence Malick Re: Porcelain tile confusion 7Dec 27, 2008 12:54 am Well that is great thanks for your replys... I will go ahead and buy the tiles now I just need to find a reputable tiler in the sunshine coast region... oh also the tiles do generally sell for $47 a meter but I asked nicely and one store out of the 8 I called gave me the price under $35... so I am definatly happy with the cost of the tiles.
So if anybody knows of any good tilers up here in QLD , Sunshine Coast area please let me know so I can get in contact. Matt Re: Porcelain tile confusion 8Aug 31, 2009 4:11 pm Hi Matt, We are doing the same tiling job in a new house on the Sunshine Coast, intending to lay about 230m2 inside and outside (matching shade) of rectified, large (500 x 500 or 600 x 600) glazed porcelain tiles on a new concrete base that hopefully will be flat. Will be very interested to hear if you locate a good tiler on the coast as the laying will be critical to the success of the project and we are some months from that part of the job as the house has not started yet. Our tiler will probably come via our builder but we do still have a choice. As we will lay the tiles up to the edge of the pool it is important we have impervious tiles that do not contain any iron due the problem of rust stains. Can you let us know where you got such a good deal on price for the tiles? Other question is cost of professional laying as it seems rectified and large size push up the cost. Thanks, Phil Re: Porcelain tile confusion 9Aug 31, 2009 4:20 pm Hey Phil, We went through beaumont for all of our tiles... BUT.. We called all 7 stores and only 1 got our business... As the tile we picked has a shelf price of $58 a sq/m and all of them quoted between $45 and $50 a meter... To get a good deal on tiles send me a message and I will give you my contacts phone number... Cheers Re: Porcelain tile confusion 10Aug 31, 2009 6:03 pm Hi Matt, Thanks for the quick response. Would appreciate contact numbers and name for Beaumont tiles contact. We are looking at all companies, but nothing decided yet. Are using P J Burns as the builder so will let you know who their layer is. Presumably should be ok but we will meet and discuss any issues with the tile selection first.
