Browse Forums Flooring & Floor Covering 1 Dec 06, 2008 11:04 am Hmmm, we are at the point where our new Spotted Gum solid timber floor was due to be laid within the next few weeks only to be advised "due to critical shortages throughout Australia the Spotted Gum timber is currently unavailable". Damn (+ a few other expletives)!
I was aware, thanks to a post (by Dukekamaya) in older thread that there was a shortage, however as we hadn't been advised otherwise I assumed that our supply had been secured. Not happy! Anyway, moving forward, our floor guy has suggested Australian Chestnut as an alternative. I know very little about this timber so any info would be appreciated; Is it similar in appearance/colour/hardness to the Spotted Gum? Should it cost the same/less than the Spotted Gum? Anything else we should know? We are also considering the Sydney Blue Gum now as it was our second choice originally (and it will also suit our selected colours). Does anybody know if this should be the same price or cheaper/dearer than the Spotted Gum? TIA. I don't know anything about spotted chestnut. But we have recently had sydney blue gum laid at our place and it's fabulous - we love it. It's come up a really rich red colour, not as dark as jarrah but in similar tones. I think it will cost about the same as the spotted gum, maybe a little bit cheaper - it's not quite as popular.
cheers. Re: Help Needed - Spotted Gum Unavailable! 3Dec 08, 2008 10:14 am Hi. I don't know anything about spotted chestnut. Coincidentally, just before I read your reply, I had just rang the flooring guy and confirmed that we would be selecting Sydney Blue Gum. So I think your post is the universe's way of validating our selection, lol.
For anyone interested the Australian Chestnut was about $20/sqm cheaper than both the Spotted Gum (if you can get any) and the Blue Gum. Its another of the southern Ash eucylptys similar in colour to Silver Top Ash, yellow stringybark and blackbutt etc. We managed to get 1200 l/m of Qld spotted gum for a customer last week Re: Help Needed - Spotted Gum Unavailable! 8Dec 09, 2008 8:41 pm We love our floor - I'm sure you will too
As I was reading I was thinking I would post a pic to show you our Sydney Blue Gum floor, but got to the end & realised I didn't need too! Re: Help Needed - Spotted Gum Unavailable! 9Jan 08, 2009 11:30 pm I think you'll love the Sydney Blue Gum.
Our floors were damaged after installation and we are also on the look out for Spotted Gum as there does seem to be a shortage. Unfortunately we can't choose something else as the stairs are in the same timber. Good luck with the Sydney Blue. Re: Help Needed - Spotted Gum Unavailable! 10Jan 09, 2009 11:49 am Thanks for the encouragement everyone. Just got a phone call this morning confirming delivery next Monday; so I should have some photos to post in a couple of weeks - can't wait !
