Browse Forums Flooring & Floor Covering 1 Nov 30, 2008 3:50 pm I tried this in finishing touch section, but got no response. Hopefully someone browsing flooring will be able to help.
We have a problem floor in our dining room. We pulled up the ugly old carpet, to find unpolished, very worn kauri floorboards (brilliant, no problem there), but a corner section of floor (about 2m x 1m) was cement! This is an unrenovated (till now) Victorian single story home. I think this room may have been extended at some point, and the cement is perhaps where the old kitchen or a fireplace was. We are looking for a cheap flooring solution because we intend to tear this part of the house down in a few years. The cheapest idea is to paint the floor (plus I like the look of it). We were thinking initially black japan, but I think it will be too heavy for the rest of the house, which has lovely golden floorboards, and our walls, which are Resene Blanc (an off-white). We are now thinking of painting the floors a creamy white. I think with the old condition of the boards this will look good, but does anyone have any recommendations on how to do this? I would like a lived in look, rather than solid gloss, and it needs to cover the cement as well to disguise it a bit. We have a big rug that will go on the floor too, so it is just the perimeter that will be seen, but that's where the concrete is! Thanks for any advice! Check out this little snipit,

Good luck I have seen the black japan over dark boards and it really does look pretty impressive if you have the option I would do that and lift the room in some other way......paint or lights or furniture. I'd like to know what they mean by scuff and wear.
I think limewash will be too subtle - as it won't help the big slab of concrete, I think it does have to be a paint. Haven't ruled out black japan, but it is a completely different look - much more dramatic, where the white/cream boards I think have a more relaxed feel.
