Browse Forums Flooring & Floor Covering 1 Dec 02, 2008 5:14 pm Hi everyone, I've been lurking here for the past few weeks learning as much as possible about carpeting as I'm redoing a room which desperately needs new carpet.
I have a question about joins. The room is rectangular in shape, measuring 4m by 7m long. We have found some carpet we like, one being 4m wide but the one we really like is 3.66m, so it would need to be joined. My question is, is there a best place for the carpet to be joined? We have been told different things from different places. One is to join straight down the centre, the other is to have joins across the length of the room, which uses more carpet so costs a bit more. I've included an image to show what I mean. Also, the carpet does have a square pattern if this makes a difference. If any more information is needed let me know. Any advice would be greatly appreciated thanks. Option A uses 8 metres, 2 x 4 metre runs. Simple. Option B should uses 8.9 metres. One 7 metre run, and one 1.9 metre run split into quarters and put down the side. (they should put a maximum of 4 peices down the side where you have the 6 peices drawn) I would be leaning towards the option A. it costs less and a join done properly will give you no worries at all. Its also only 4M of join as opposed to 9M of joins in option B. I have my lounge room at home same as option A and we have a lounge over one end of the join, and a tv cabinet over the other. so theres only a metre or so of join you can see in the middle. But if it was going to be somthing like a formal dining room where you didnt want a visible join down the middle, you could go option B and have it over next to the wall where its unlikley to be seen. Re: Best place for carpet joins? 3Dec 03, 2008 5:06 pm Where is the main source of light coming from?
If from the top or bottom sides, then option A would be good. If from the left or right hand ends, that I may tend to lean towards option B. Style of carpets, pattern in yarn height or colour may also play into this as well as you'd want an experienced layer for option B if it was multi level or colour patterned. IMHO only of course. The room will be a lounge and dining, and if going option A the join would be mostly covered by a lounge and side table, with about 1m left uncovered. As for the main source of light, this comes mostly from the top side where there are two large windows which cover most of the wall. There is also a sliding door on the right wall which lets in a lot of light in the afternoons. The carpet we are looking at is a level loop and cut pile from Godfrey Hirst, which has a square pattern. We were a bit worried with option B in lining up the pattern correctly. I appreciate any other advice you have, at the moment option A looks like the best way to go, and is cheaper so that's a bonus! Appreciate that Chippy.
