Browse Forums Flooring & Floor Covering 1 Nov 21, 2008 1:22 pm go to work today.. supposed to be a nice easy day of cutting carpet up for the big job on the weekend..
then my mate the carpet cleaner rings, it can be good or bad when pete rings. Good is normally he has some beer for us, bad is he has a job for us. And todays was the worst job he has ever come up with. Brand new house, its only a few blocks from my place so ive seen it finished a good 6 months ago and no one living in it. Noticed yesterday a bloke moving some stuff in. its a small 3 bedroom place, not too bad but a backyard of like 5 square metres.. Is that your silver ute? God it's a shame you're not in Melbourne... Seriously though. That is terrible. Are they at least insured? More importantly.... did Pete supply any beer? Jo I leave you to fend for yourself, figure things out yourself. Terrence Malick Re: You thought you had something to complain about ?? 3Nov 21, 2008 1:34 pm hahaha.
yeah thats my ute! not my work one tho. you cant live in bathurst and not have a v8 yeah they were insured, local counsel turned up for 5 minutes to look at the drains, declared it wasnt their fault and left. lol ! no beer from pete, he said he'd get some but i was in a hurry to get home for a shower and wasnt waiting for him to finished mopping that up ! if it was my house id be asking for new gyprock, skirtings and anything that it touched thats porous (spelling?) Re: You thought you had something to complain about ?? 4Nov 21, 2008 1:41 pm So is it actually raw sewerage????
Yuk..... how will they get the smell out? Won't it still linger? I would be absolutely devastated if that was me.... Steveo.... let's be clear... you have 2 utes??? Forget Bathurst!!! Nothing short of a hot pressure wash on all solid surfaces and replacement of wall sheeting, probably kitchen fixtures and any organic materials. This could include woodwork of any type including skirting boards and possibly even bottom plates on walls. I hope you had some decent personal protective equipment on when removing this carpet . Have you had your Hep B shots? All it takes is one little prick from the smoothedge and you can catch who knows what from that. Your mate was taking a hell of a risk with just shorts and a pair of joggers on and no respirator. This is serious stuff when you are dealing with bio contaminations like this. It is not the sort of job for the average carpet cleaner. There are some really serious health implications on jobs such as this and needs specialist contractors who deal with trauma clean up. I used to not think about these things in my early days in the carpet cleaning industry but there is no way I would go in their without full protection these days. Someone has to live in this home afterwards and it needs to be thoroughly de-contaminated or else the smell (bacteria) will be back anytime there is some humid weather. This can place the new occupants at risk for many years after. And I agree , nice ute. cheers Col Nation For information on caring for wool and other carpet and upholstery go to www.woolsafe.com.au Re: You thought you had something to complain about ?? 11Nov 21, 2008 7:04 pm Oh god that's awful steveo. That poor tenant. Sounds like maybe it was not connected up properly when the house was built, but nobody knew till the house was lived in and used properly?
DeeElle I hope your problem wasn't this bad! Re: You thought you had something to complain about ?? 12Nov 21, 2008 8:50 pm Col Nation A mop and a bucket is not going to fix this one. And I agree , nice ute. yeah mate, i tried to explain to the owner lady this arvo about how much bacteria etc would be in there, but she wasnt interested in listening ! i dont think she realised exactly what kinda damage was done, so ill show her these photos when she comes into the shop next. & yep ive had my shots as we do this kinda work a bit. i get the full arm length gloves on, knee high gumboots and a facemask. i know following the rules theres alot more your supposed to do, if you wanted to read them hard enough you'd need a full body suit, own air supply etc.. but today i didnt get a single drop of water on me. i dont pick any of the carpet up, i cut it into small peices and drag it out into the bin. and as for pete, hes a crazy old fella who has been doing it for so long that i dont even bother to tell him anything, as he wouldnt listen to a word i say anyway ! i dont even know why he moped the floor, i think it was because i pulled all the carpet/underlay out while he stood out the front and watched so he felt he had to do something. hahaha. Re: You thought you had something to complain about ?? 13Nov 23, 2008 1:12 pm Steveo , a handy trick can be to cut the carpet and underlay into smaller pieces and then put them into a garbage bag, and then put the vac hose from a hot water extractor into the bag and seal the top of the bag around the hose.
It basically sucks out most of the water (especcially from the underlay) and makes it lighter and easier to transport out to the bin without dripping all over the rest of the house. If you can tie off the top of the bag it sort of vacuum seals it in and helps prevent odours around the neigbour hood as well. Not that you want to do this job every day, but when it happens, someone has to do it. cheers Col Nation For information on caring for wool and other carpet and upholstery go to www.woolsafe.com.au Re: You thought you had something to complain about ?? 14Nov 23, 2008 1:17 pm On a similar note I have spent all day Saturday on the Gold Coast trying to help a local carpet cleaner deal with a shop full of water damaged oriental rugs from the recent storms.
Some really top end rugs amoungst them as well. Some have major colour runs from other rugs sitting on top but the majority we will be able to save. It is srprising just how much disater restoration work is carried out these days. cheers Col Nation For information on caring for wool and other carpet and upholstery go to www.woolsafe.com.au Re: You thought you had something to complain about ?? 15Nov 23, 2008 1:36 pm donuts Oh god that's awful steveo.
