We have a problem floor in our dining room. We pulled up the ugly old carpet, to find unpolished, very worn kauri floorboards (brilliant, no problem there), but a corner section of floor (about 2m x 1m) was cement! This is an unrenovated (till now) Victorian single story home. I think this room may have been extended at some point, and the cement is perhaps where the old kitchen or a fireplace was. We are looking for a cheap flooring solution because we intend to tear this part of the house down in a few years. The cheapest idea is to paint the floor (plus I like the look of it). We were thinking initially black japan, but I think it will be too heavy for the rest of the house, which has lovely golden floorboards, and our walls, which are Resene Blanc (an off-white). We are now thinking of painting the floors a creamy white. I think with the old condition of the boards this will look good, but does anyone have any recommendations on how to do this? I would like a lived in look, rather than solid gloss, and it needs to cover the cement as well to disguise it a bit. We have a big rug that will go on the floor too, so it is just the perimeter that will be seen, but that's where the concrete is! Thanks for any advice! You will need to sand the floor back well, so the new paint can adhered to the floorboards. If you are looking for a lived in look, this is easy to achieve. You just need to pain the boards roughly, not a perfect job, a little like the shabby sheik look. It should look good. Do it in a mat paint if you don’t want the gloss look. As it starts to wear off, even better! Now, the concrete……paint that the same colour roughly as well. As you said it’s all coming out later so who cares. Then I would place some ceramic post on this area to disguise the concert. Remember, by adding dominate pieces around the room such as, furniture rugs and some nice bright ceramics pots and plants on the concert area, no one will look too closely at the flooring. I think this will work for you in the short term. Have fun, I’d like to be giving this a go, it should look pretty neat! The old fireplace is part of the history of the hosue, so recognize it as you feel fit. I dropped in to Porters this morning and they have a specific stain/wash for floorboards. I wasn't too interested in this at first because the example picture on their website uses a very pale subtle wash, but in store they had a sample on wood which was a heavier coat and just the look I am after. So very happy! Hi All New to the forum and looking for some advice, has anyone else renovated an old miners cottage in or around Ballarat and been able to identify the flooring?
