Browse Forums Flooring & Floor Covering 1 Jan 16, 2007 12:57 pm After much consideration we have decided to floorboard our main living area (extension) after ripping tiles off. However, the existing floor in the house is mainly older floorboard ( light coloured ).Would it be unusal or wrong to make the living area a more modern floorboard , perhaps a Kempas ( floating) ? The new area is an extension which would mean the older floorboard would meet where the new floorboard begins.
The alternative is carpet in the extended area but worried about maintainance as we have young kids. SSS Re: Different types of floorboards 2Jan 16, 2007 4:50 pm if you have young children, I wouldn't recomend floating floors, most floating floors are plywood with a timber veneer and when damaged it is a risky exersize to resand them without breaking through to the plywood.99% of floor sanders will not even attempt to resand a floating floor, although i have sanded a couple of harder veneer types without any problems.you would be better off laying a solid 19mm t&g floor over the exsisting floor, at least it could be resanded many times without worrying about breaking through to plywood, also Tounge & Grove timber floors can be supplyed layed and polished for the same price as a floating floor, sometimes cheaper
floating floors look cheap to buy but unless you can lay them yourself they can get expensive. you will need to buy a floating floor. you need to buy a foam underlay for the floating floor to be laid on and unless you can cut and lay them yourself, you will have to pay someone to lay them as well. this all brings the price up to around the same price as a solid T&G Floor This is what i charge for solid T&G Blackbutt Standard Grade or better 80mm x 19mm Solid Tongue & Groove Timber Flooring Supplied, Laid, Sanded & Polished, on existing particle board. Its Qld blackbutt so a little darker than the regular NSW stuff.
You do wider boards or prefer the secret nail profile? Re: Different types of floorboards 4Jan 16, 2007 8:20 pm hey Luke
we secret nail all our floors. I even secret nail the wide boards as I find it easier to lay without having to clamp them up, then i just string line them and race over with the T nailer placing three nails per board on the wide ones, I end up with nice straight lines then. Most of my timber comes from up north and the cyprus comes from gunnadarh, Iv got a mate with a truck who picks it up and delivers it straight to the site. we also travel, I just finished laying 190 sq metres with boarders grrrrrrrrr and a pattern infill in the foyer at camden south of sydney, I hate borders lol, but they look great when finished. we had a few problems with the darker blackbut cupping last year, but that was new england blackbut. it seems to have settled back down again now, I think the drought conditions had a lot too do with it. its really important to acclimatise for a little longer at present because of the dryer weather,im finding floors are shrinking rather than growing. I havent had any bad batches for quite a while so it looks like the timber mills are up on there game with the dryer conditions.and drying the timber to suit the conditions Im comming down that way next month to visit my sister, she lives in berry, not that far from nowra barnsey Re: Different types of floorboards 5Jan 17, 2007 4:45 pm Yeah I'm going to lay my 5 inch blackbutt the same - secret nail then top-nail with a finishing gun, saves on the clamping time.
We generally don't recommend secret nailing cypress at all. You must be paying a bit for it - we sell it for about $32 sq. metre. Re: Different types of floorboards 7Jan 17, 2007 8:02 pm Which prices?
Prices can vary greatly within species with different grades and widths. Generally 80mm (secret nail) feature and standard and 130mm (top nail) feature are fairly close. Once you hit select 80mm and standard 130mm the prices jump. This can vary with certain species though. Several species are also only available in standard or select. yep you need a joint, foam is easiest, will look fine once rendered with a joint. 2 5245 Hi, have purchased a house with 2 single garage doors.
