Browse Forums Flooring & Floor Covering 1 Nov 10, 2008 8:50 am Hi Everyone,
I am wondering how much 'scratching or marking' of the skirting boards is acceptable as a result of carpet laying. I will try and post a pic tonight to better explain but basically around our white skirting boards are lots of horizontal grey marks as a result of carpet laying. I am holding off paying them until i decide if i am being too fussy or whether this is something we should have expected. We anticipated it with the wooden floor polishing and therefore had our painters come back for a 2nd coat on the skirts around the boards but hadn't anticipated it with the carpets. Have other people had this problem or are their skirting boards mark free? It sounds like to me the layer was very careless and has no pride in his or her work. Craig Re: Marks on skirting boards following carpet laying 5Nov 11, 2008 1:58 pm No marks here either!!
Floorboards .... I think some may be acceptable but a good carpet layer should have no reason to make any marks on the skirting boards IMO. If they use a knee stretcher, that's when it usually happens. Its metal and I ‘v seen the damage it can do. They are sold at hardware shops under a variety of brand names.
A bit of plain water and a bit of a rub with the microfibre block and they usually come straight off. cheers Col Nation For information on caring for wool and other carpet and upholstery go to www.woolsafe.com.au Re: Marks on skirting boards following carpet laying 11Nov 17, 2008 7:23 pm get some pictures of the marks and ill tell you exactly what tool there from.
they can be from a few different things ! the 2 biggest factors of scratches on the skirtings are - the type and quality of the paint, high gloss etc. and the backing on the carpet - action back is like friggin sandpaper ! hessian is not as bad, but can still scratch high gloss paint. and the synthetic backed stuff wont scratch a thing. but the carpet shop probably didnt tell you what type of backing your carpet was anyway. This is a bit of a touchy subject, as i know first hand that some bad quality paints will scratch no matter what you do! and it frustrates the hell out of me. BUT when it comes down to it, your skirtings wernt scratched before they layed the carpet and now they are, so the carpet shop should make it right. if they are the black marks parallel with the ground they are from the smoothedge trimmer, and 100% the layers fault. vertical scratch marks are from tucking the carpet in the smoothedge gap with the bolster. usually caused by the carpet itself scratching the paint, or the bolster scratching the paint. They do look different and i can tell em apart but i cant explain the difference. I'm about to put down some Merbau.
