Browse Forums Flooring & Floor Covering 1 Oct 24, 2008 2:09 pm I am having a blonde or seniors moment - or both! In very simple terms can someone explain for me how I calculate requirements for carpeting a room when the carpet comes in 12 foot width (3.6 metres??) and the room is 20 ft long but then there's a side bit because the room is say 13 foot rather than 12 foot wide. Do I have to have another strip 20 ft long to do the extra foot width of the room and then waste the rest ? Or do they lay it "sideways" or what ?
I guess the hidden question also is why do they still only make carpets 12 foot wide when our rooms are getting larger and larger? Or couldn't they make it narrower, say 8 foot so you could have narrower runs of carpet but two of them. This sounds so dumb how I have written it and I hope someone knows what I am trying to ask! But look, if it weren't for me asking darn fool questions like this you wouldn't have anyone to feel "superior to" would you! Re: Carpet measurement Calculations 2Oct 24, 2008 2:30 pm I'm sure there's threads on where they place joins but this may help...we just did the study and they worked it off square metres but it was less than a broadloom wide...

so the room is 13ft by 20 ft ?? i think thats what your saying. no you wont have to buy a second run at 20 ft ! you will get one run at 20 ft, and then whats called a quarter split down the side for the fill. you'll need a 5ft peice for that (well a little over to allow some for cutting joins) it will be cut into strips and filled down the side, with a mat left over about 7 ft x 5ft. ive attatched a picture of what i mean. oh and yes, most carpet is still 12 ft wide but there are getting more and more made at 4 metres wide ! so if you pick one of those you'll have no joins! http://i389.photobucket.com/albums/oo331/steveophotos/27102008217Medium.jpg Re: Carpet measurement Calculations 4Oct 28, 2008 5:36 pm Bless you! A man that explains in pictures! Thank you I think I get it now. I figured that like dress fabric, carpet has a "grain" as well and you couldn't just change directions for the extra bit but wasn't sure how they went about it. Now I know the logic behind it I will sit down with my own pencil and paper and like juggling the pattern pieces in dressmaking see how I could perhaps carpet two rooms and make best use of the lengths.
On the otherhand I was thinking of taking up the living room carpet (which is in good condition but I am just BORED with it) and relaying it in a bedroom and now I can juggle with that too to see how they could do that also. Contray to popular wisdom, I think there can be disdvantages in getting TOO good a quality carpet ie maybe sometimes they last too long! The one I have now will probably outlive me in terms of its staying power but I am just tired of it - and of course feeling very self indulgent for wanting to change a perfectly good carpet for no other reason! I could have it dyed I suppose but then I figure for all that bother just go and get another! So in somethings, good quality can turn out to be a bit of a drag! Not what we are usually told but then maybe I am a bit on the ADHD side - I get tired of colours after a while. On the otherhand I don't want to go the safe track and get neutrals etc. I may be tired of these carpets now but I have well and truly loved them for the first few years. I can't imagine ever loving neutral safe colour carpets even in their heyday! So, I'm fickle obviously. Thank you though for your explanation. I can go out now armed with this knowledge and let my head go. What's wrong with acting like an ostrich and burying your head in the sand sometimes?
