Browse Forums Flooring & Floor Covering 1 Oct 22, 2008 8:28 am A friend of mine is about to replace some carpet and I thought I'd ask for a bit of carpet advice for her.
It's a high traffic area due to the lounge also being the traffic route between the front door, kitchen and the bathroom. She's looking at one of the Hycraft wool twist products with a 8mm rubber underlay and the potential supplier say they willl use a power strecher, and the joins will be as follows. 1 x Join in the doorway near the bathroom sereies of joins along the back wall with one continuous lay along the bottom wall through both adjoining rooms and they will cut it to fit around the lounge/bedroom wall. Questions are - what is wool like re cleaning and durability - she'd rather not have to maintain it every day etc, and enjoy entertaining and other things in life. Is she better off with a stainmaster product, or is the wool reasonably easy to maintain? Rooms are Bedroom 3.8 x 4.2 Lounge 3.8 x 4.2 + a section in front of the bathroom, 1.2 x 1 Total cost for the above in what she wants is $2.5K at present. Sounds reasonable based on what I can see? Suggestions - recommendations etc? Steve Re: Wool or Synth Carpet 3Oct 23, 2008 9:56 am steveo247 snythetic by a mile.. will write a reason when i get home this arvo ! oh, looking forward to hearing the reason. I was out looking at wool carpet this week Happy at Home Re: Wool or Synth Carpet 4Oct 23, 2008 10:03 am I'm going for 100% wool carpet. There is no comparison for me.
It just feels better underfoot, better to lay on when watching telly, better to ummm... play and roll around on! Even though wool will shed intiially I just prefer it. The synthetic feels like what it is.... synthetic. It's like the difference between vinyl and leather shoes..... But that's just me! Jo I leave you to fend for yourself, figure things out yourself. Terrence Malick Re: Wool or Synth Carpet 5Oct 23, 2008 10:10 am I've never had wool carpet before (did as a kid in NZ but not since having my own home). The shedding part is what bothers me. Does it get on clothes etc? The people at the carpet place don't really say one is better than the other...........just another confusing thing for me to work out. What about a 80/20 mix? Happy at Home Re: Wool or Synth Carpet 6Oct 23, 2008 10:16 am joles I'm going for 100% wool carpet. There is no comparison for me. But that's just me! Jo Same, esp after speaking to our local 3rd generation carpet guy about it at great length!!! Solidarity, not solidity.......The Lexicon of Life Re: Wool or Synth Carpet 7Oct 23, 2008 10:17 am Well my understanding.... this is going by what's been said in the past on the forum.... the two types of fibres require completely different cleaning procedures so mixed carpets are a pain in the ar*e to clean properly. It acn be done but it's a pain.... I'm sure Steveo can elaborate on this and tell me if I'm wrong.
The shedding is minimal though... and it passes as the carpet settles. I personally am just a fan of natural fibres in general.... I'd rather but clothes that are made from cotton or wool, leather, than any synthetic. It may be a mental thing but I just like the feel and texture and warmth I guess of the wool. And it just looks better to me. The synthetic carpets just look sort of cheap or something. But if I had a house full of young kids or was still at uni and partying... I'd put in synthetic... but change to wool later. Jo I'm also interested to see what Steveo has to say on this. I leave you to fend for yourself, figure things out yourself. Terrence Malick Re: Wool or Synth Carpet 8Oct 23, 2008 10:40 am ok thanks. Will look into it a bit more........and wait and see what Steveo comes back with as well.
I found another thread last night (didn't book mark it) and they said wool was hopeless with ducted vac Don't really understand why this would be......maybe their ducted vac was old and crap. Anyway.......thanks. Happy at Home Re: Wool or Synth Carpet 9Oct 23, 2008 10:44 am I’m interested to see what Stevo comes back with this arvo.
By the way, I’m off to Carpet Court soon…….will run the question past them while I’m there. Although I think I already know the answer. Ask them if ducted Vac works okay too please. Happy at Home Re: Wool or Synth Carpet 11Oct 23, 2008 11:01 am House-To-Be I found another thread last night (didn't book mark it) and they said wool was hopeless with ducted vac That’s wrong; the carpet has nothing to do with how the ducted vac works! If it’s not working with wool carpet, then it’s the vac, not the carpet, its not sucking hard enough. They need their ducted vac looked at. I personally don’t know much about ducted vac systems, but I do know with wool carpet, you need a GOOD vacuum cleaner. Internal and External Building and Colour Consultant Online - Worldwide http://www.denovoconcepts.com Re: Wool or Synth Carpet 12Oct 23, 2008 11:08 am Thanks Michelle, I thought their vac system must've been old and not working too well. We are getting ducted and I think from memory it's about 14,000kpm. Happy at Home Re: Wool or Synth Carpet 13Oct 23, 2008 11:12 am House-To-Be Thanks Michelle, I thought their vac system must've been old and not working too well. Internal and External Building and Colour Consultant Online - Worldwide http://www.denovoconcepts.com Re: Wool or Synth Carpet 14Oct 23, 2008 11:23 am Well I like good suction Nothing worse than vac'ing with a hopeless system. Better go and vac this house now...... Happy at Home Re: Wool or Synth Carpet 16Oct 23, 2008 2:52 pm joles Michelle its not sucking hard enough. This is true.... I've found sucking hard is best. The vacuum that is. Jo Stop it...... the joins sound like there in good spots, doorway joins are good becuase the door closed covers them. and then joins along the back wall will be there becuase the room is wider than the carpet (3.66m). so no worries there. the price of 2500 for around 9 metres of carpet (i cant work it out exactly without a plan) will get her some very high quality carpet ! Although i suggest she looks at dunlop ultimate foam underlay over the rubber ! Hycraft is a great carpet brand, there products are top quality. some of thier carpets i pull up have been down for 30 years and look fine "what is wool like re cleaning and durability" - Not as good as man made fibres. not even close really ! wool will accept/soak in liquid where made fibres wont. This makes it alot harder to get whatever you have spilled out. You can stain any carpet of course, but wool will stain alot easier than a made fibre. Because the wool fibre acceps liquid, even a professional steam clean may not get everything out. Where with a made fibre that doesnt accept liquid, the stain sits on the fibre not soaking into it. durability hands down made fibres! Up to 4 times longer for the same weight carpet. we put 90% wool 10% nylon carpet in schools, when you go back 5 years later and the wool is wearing down, the nylon tufts stand a few mm above the wool tufts becuase they havnt yet worn down. But neither will require daily maintence, a twice weekly vacuum will be fine (more or less depending on traffic/kids etc) your friends budget is at the upper end of the domestic carpet range, and those hycraft wools will be great ! for wool i also highly recommend Cavalier Bremworth carpets. what im saying is if you bought a 100% wool 35oz twist. and a 100% made fibre 35oz twist, the made fibre will outperform it in every way. A really good 100% nylon twist is godfrey hirst carpets, Inspirational Living from the carisse collection. thats what ill put in my house when i build one. Definatley worth a look ! and i think its around the $245 a metre mark. Re: Wool or Synth Carpet 18Oct 23, 2008 3:17 pm joles I'm going for 100% wool carpet. There is no comparison for me. Jo i understand where your coming from mate ! and back in the day this was true, but now there are made fibres that in my opinion look, and feel every bit as good as wool ! the problem is that cheaper nylons/made fibres still feel very rough hard and are shiny like plastic, so when people feel/see these they group all made fibres into this category. some examples are berclon fibre and polypropelene and cheaper nylon. these are great for wear but not so nice to feel. when you look at and feel the higher quality made fibres, such as the permasoft soloution dyed nylons & the signature carpets chromolon fibre carpets, you will be surprised how great they feel! godfrey hirst's carisse collection is a good example of soft as wool nylon. But like I said, if I had younger kids, I'd go nylon. Jo I leave you to fend for yourself, figure things out yourself. What about a 80/20 mix? dont worry about the shedding, it doesnt really get on many things except fill up your vacuum cleaner! although it does really bother me that they will sell you a 50oz wool carpet, then in the first few weeks it sheds quite a bit of this weight and they say thats normal. so your not really buying a 50oz carpet 80/20 90/10 's etc are ok, but id be going for 100% one or the other. 1 8167 1 12678 they can, it's a fairly standard solution when the slab isn't recessed. the falls need to be in the main floor, if it hasn't been done then you need to ask them to redo… 4 5039 |
