Thanks for all the info re the Carpets. I'm still unsure as to what way I'll go. I do have children and want to put down what will me more durable with them around, my youngest is four and he's a boy need I say more! As for the ducted vac, I have it in my current house and love it. Reasons - I only have to pull a hose around, no machine knocking into my walls/corners or furniture. Easy to empty and I personally think less dust. We paid around $1500 for ours through our builder. I believe we could have saved about $500 if we had of just gotten the builder to rough in the pipework and install ourselves but it's done now and I'm happy Happy at Home Re: Wool or Synth Carpet 23Oct 23, 2008 4:13 pm steveo247 House-To-Be Thanks Michelle. When you have small kids that tend to make a mess around the dining table I can think of one advantage....one of these would be fan-bloody-tastic...particular when the 18 month plays "pilot-to-bombardier" with food over the side of the high chair.... She had one of those things in her kitchen also…….it was called a “whole in the floor”! No kidding, she used to sweep the floor and put it all down the whole. Love it!!! I ended up going a 100% wool carpet & got lots of great advice from Ash at the time.....I wanted a carpet that was hopefully going to still look good in 15-20 years. Obviously I'll need to look after it properly to achieve this.. I ended up with a level loop pile & have to say that I have had pratically no shedding. I love the carpet & because of the fairly tight loop any dirt etc sits on top. So far any I had a couple of baby mishaps which I have cleaned up, diluted with water & then absorbed any moisture with paper towell...easy! Even had a bit of blue water based paint which was put on the carpet off one of the kids art creations from school on the first weekend we moved in Diluted with water, paper towell etc etc ...gone (am I started to sound like Ash? ) Re: Wool or Synth Carpet 33Oct 23, 2008 9:28 pm Thanks for the advice Steveo (good name by the way)
Here is a very rough plan that I've just drawn up - NOT to scale, but the measurements are as per my first post. There is a berber style carpet in the bed and lounge and little square in front of the bathroom kitchen. Other areas are polished florboards or tiles. Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ No doors will be above the joins as the doors are on the bathroom and kitchen only but it seems to have worn well so far. I'll review some of the synth fibres over the weekend. The carpet she liked was this one - see page 1 of this cattle dog. http://www.godfreyhirst.com/pdfs/HYC_CapetChoiceSpring08.PDF But substitute a bit of light blue into it as well. Nice pattern and texture and it suits the room. Now time to break the bad news to her. Thanks for the expert advice. I'll keep you posted. As for the ducted vac not working - yes they should be better than a portable vac - something wrong with it IMO. Steve Re: Wool or Synth Carpet 34Oct 24, 2008 1:18 pm No kidding, she used to sweep the floor and put it all down the hole.
Excuse me but are you suggesting that there's something wrong with that??? What's wrong with acting like an ostrich and burying your head in the sand sometimes? Some days it can stop you from having to look at the lemmings! Re: Wool or Synth Carpet 35Oct 24, 2008 1:23 pm lilian No kidding, she used to sweep the floor and put it all down the hole. Excuse me but are you suggesting that there's something wrong with that??? Nope……wish I had my own whole in the floor! Internal and External Building and Colour Consultant Online - Worldwide http://www.denovoconcepts.com Re: Wool or Synth Carpet 36Oct 24, 2008 1:36 pm Actually yes - to sink through sometimes and hide from the kids! Speaking of which, that little dustpan sucker in the wall thingy - the mind boggles at what my daughter would have done with it. I am sure that some part of her anatomy ( or more likely the cat's) would have been lost forever down it, not to mention the odd brussels sprout, notes from the teacher, the detested spectacles etc etc You get the picture!
Actually again, speaking of cats, I am not sure that HE wouldn't have been the bigger nuisance. I doubt whether it would take him long to figure out the mechanism (with a bit of help from daughter/dog) and then. . . . Nah, I'll go for the hole in the floor anyday, especially if it is nicely covered so only MUM knows about it! What's wrong with acting like an ostrich and burying your head in the sand sometimes? Some days it can stop you from having to look at the lemmings! Re: Wool or Synth Carpet 37Oct 24, 2008 2:31 pm After speaking to two different sales people I'm leaning towards a solution dyed Nylon. Why? Because both of the sales people told me to stay away from wool due to my DH and youngest being Asthmatic. Asthma wasn't something I thought of There was a wool carpet there that I loved, will look into the Asthma thing tonight.
