Browse Forums Flooring & Floor Covering 1 Jan 09, 2007 9:32 am Hi, all
There are many different brands of polyurethane finish used by different floor sanding tradesmen. And they are all claimed to be best. Does anyone know what's the best in terms of price, durability, fast drying and being less smell? Thank you Re: Does anyone know a better brand of polyurethane finish? 2Jan 09, 2007 11:03 am Jessie I'm no expert by my cousin just re-did his floors with a clear 2-pac that uses part-A and part-B mixtures. Bought it from Bunnings but can't remember the brand - maybe wattyl. Anyway, the point is that it gives a high gloss finish but a surface that is as hard as glass. But it is a little more difficult to apply/work with. I find that polyurethane wears out or loses it's lustre in high traffic areas but is easy to apply. I think you need to decide on the finish you are after (i.e mat, gloss, stained etc.) then go from there. Re: Does anyone know a better brand of polyurethane finish? 3Jan 09, 2007 11:43 am If you want low-odour and fast drying you need to look at water-based polyurethanes. Oil based finishes will keep you out of the house for about a week. As stated, you need to work out the gloss level your after - water based poly's aren't as glossy as oil based.
I'd be looking at Bostik or Intergrain personally for water-based finishes. Re: Does anyone know a better brand of polyurethane finish? 4Jan 09, 2007 3:55 pm Thank you all very much for your input.
Yes, I've opted for water-based finishes. Two of the tradesmen giving quotes use polyurethanes from Toby and Urethane Coatings. Are they reliable brands? Dukekamaya, how are they compared with Bostik or Intergrain? Many thanks Re: Does anyone know a better brand of polyurethane finish? 5Jan 09, 2007 7:10 pm Never heard of them, thats not to say they're not good - there are dozens of manufacturers out there. Ask for some pics of jobs they've done. Re: Does anyone know a better brand of polyurethane finish? 6Jan 09, 2007 11:41 pm >>Ask for some pics of jobs they've done.
Yes. Seeing is believing. This is probably the only way to check the quality of their jobs. Thanks a lot. You have been very helpful. Re: Does anyone know a better brand of polyurethane finish? 7Jan 14, 2007 5:26 pm Iv been using toby's coatings for over twenty years, as a professional floorsander i use there two pack finish, dry time is approx 8 hours and you will get 8 to 10 years wear out of it before needing to recoat. wattle 7008 is another of the products i use. yes two pack is a bit fuemy but it is only fumey whilst wet, Iv tried all sorts of water based and single pack polly's over the years and havn't found one that will out last two pack.

The biggest problem with oil based poly's apart from the fumes is the yellowing of the timber, which gets worse with age. Re: Does anyone know a better brand of polyurethane finish? 9Jan 14, 2007 9:43 pm the new two pack polly's that i use and made by toby's are all solvent based and have come along way from the early years, wattle 7008 used to yellow up faily quickley but tecknology seems to have overcome this problem and the yellowing problem is not as bad as it once was.
but no matter which product you use you will always have a color varience where rugs or furniture are placed.the natural sunlight causes the timber to discolor around furniture and rugs. If you move a rug that has been in front of a window you will find the floor undeneith it is the same as the day the rug was placed there. i know of a couple of well known water based products on the market which turn the timber a shade of green when applied to blackbutt t&g flooring barnsey Normally you use builders bog.
