Browse Forums Flooring & Floor Covering 1 Oct 09, 2008 9:07 pm Hi guys,
I need you expert advice. We currently have approx 75m2 of ceramic tiles throughout our home and I want to change them. First question: Should we tile over the top of the existing tiles? or Should we remove the existing tiles ( I dont want to do this unless absolutley recomended) My husband ( not a tiler!) is going to be re-tiling ( he laid the existing tiles 7 yrs ago ) now they are not perfect...........some grout lines dont match up, some tiles are higher than others...............however to the uneducated eye overall he did pretty good. With this knowledge should we go for glazed ceramic or glazed porcelain?. And do you have any tips or advice to help us not make a big mess of this job!. Or should we just bite the bullett and get a tiler in to do the job? cheers Rachael Re: A question for all the tilers out there! 2Oct 09, 2008 10:19 pm Good tilers are hard to come by...I have not yet found one that is up to the standard that I expect....
I would personally go for glazed ceramic. Where are these tiles that you're referring to? In a family/dining room I suspect? In all honesty, I would remove the old tiles as well as the screed. Tiling on top will increase your floor level... ...and with your husband, it's up to you whether his standard of work is something you'd be prepared to live with everyday! Re: A question for all the tilers out there! 3Oct 10, 2008 11:37 am Yes I agree the tiles should be removed than new ones layed I would let a professional to do it for you if your husband wants he can rip up the exsiting ones himself just need to hire a jack hammer with spade tool attached and a dry vac and shovel this is a real messy job dust everywhere so cover up everything.
If you want a good tiler ask the tile shops they know the good ones. Glazed ceramics or porcelains are fine. Craig Re: A question for all the tilers out there! 4Oct 10, 2008 7:03 pm The tiles will be laid in the family, dining.kitchen and entrance area. My husband works as a demolition contractor, so he has the required tools to remove the old tiles, however I am extremely sceptical about him doing this as i have heard about the amount of work involved ( including massive amounts of dust etc). We have spoken to a few people in tile shops and they have all agreed that to save all the heartache and hard work, we should just tile on top of the existing tiles( making sure not to line up the same grout lines as underneath ).
My biggest concern is whether the glazed ceramic or porcelain have to be laid absolutley perfect otherwise they look terrible. To be honest my husband doesnt particularly want to do this job at all, so I am trying to make it as painless as possible Cheers Rachael Re: A question for all the tilers out there! 5Oct 11, 2008 11:05 am It all depends on the size of tile you are buying large tiles are harder to lay and can crack if the floor is not even. If you go over the exsiting tiles than all doors may have to be cut and is there any carpet in bedrooms this will be a problem too, many tilers do it this way but they have to make sure there floor is prepared before laying new tiles again.
You also said that your husband layed the previous ones and you are not happy with them are you sure you want him to do that again Bite the bullett and get a professional that way if he makes a mistake than it is his problem not yours Goodluck. Craig A question. Im in Queensland and building a new home. We managed to reach practical completion 6 weeks ago but we haven't heard any date for handover yet. Who should we… 0 5806 This is one of the reasons I decided to go overseas for my double glazed windows. As the builder indicated, he's worked on many upmarket builds, these were the most well… 13 19233 4 14287 |
