That way you only have to worry about the shiny surface finish and not the black underneath.
Black Japan gets you close but not the dancefloor bling finish that Jo wants. If you are going to use a system like this you'd probably be best looking at recycled timber flooring, certainly not a top of the line board with a nice grain which you are then going to paint black. But then you don't want to go too cheap otherwise you run into problems with floor durability....does this make sense.....you want to simply want a timber board not pay for the grain.... This is the second time you've hit the nail on the head today!!! I think that's what I'm after... wonder if it's pricey.... Scratch resistant.... Thanks Mike... I knew a nerd would help. I leave you to fend for yourself, figure things out yourself. Terrence Malick Re: Black floorboards anyone??? 25Oct 08, 2008 6:44 pm Jo…….way to go!
Love it. Internal and External Building and Colour Consultant Online - Worldwide http://www.denovoconcepts.com Re: Black floorboards anyone??? 27Oct 08, 2008 6:50 pm So this would be a far more durable finish than normal floorboards? Am I correct in assuming this?
And it could be touched up? And is there resanding to redo them? I love floorboards but they're not practical with the dogs... this could be the answer.... Scratch resistant.... Thanks Mike... I knew a nerd would help. The coating would be pricey and I don't think I'd want to be in the house for a few days after the application of an epoxy paint (would be stinky)....the black paint is whatever paint costs....and because you might be able to save on the boards...maybe overall probably not too bad... You could get in touch with them/him and find out who they used to do the floors. That wouldn't be that common that he wouldn't forget.
Or possibly get in touch with Vogue? the issue was from Vogue Living (Australia) March/April 2006 Re: Black floorboards anyone??? 31Oct 08, 2008 7:01 pm gweluphome Joles there is nothing else in there about the floors except as I said they kept calling them anodised/anodized....The decorator for the house was Australian designer, Jean-Pierre Heurteau although he is frech aparently he works out of Melbourne. re the black floors - Paint them black, the coat them with standard poly urethane floor covering. black underneath, shiny on top. But with dogs and not liking cleaning. Not my choice. Been there done that. Steve Re: Black floorboards anyone??? 36Oct 08, 2008 7:14 pm joles Vogue??? French designers???? Way out of my league!!! Hey I felt out of my league writing french designer and Vogue magazine is fun to look at but I am more of a Better homes kind of girl. Re: Black floorboards anyone??? 37Oct 13, 2008 10:29 am where are you up to with this Joles?
Are you still thinking floorboards or have you moved in another direction. We had black japan on our baltic timber floors (done back in the 1920's) and there was no grain showing through but it was hellish to get it off. Why don't you look into some of the African timbers ... ring a timber company and see if they can help you out. I've seen some stunning black timbers with very little grain on my searches for flooring. There is probably some v dark Indonesian/Malaysian timbers you could source at a cheaper price. But I LOVE the idea of black timber floors. Simply stunning. Yes you will see the dog hair and dust balls but oh.... it would be worth it . Just bumping this thread as I am looking to do the same to my floorboards. They are currently painted white, by the previous owners & I want to make them a glossy black. Did you ever work out how to do this successfully Jo? I know it was a few years back now, but it appears to be popular in quite a few magazines. Thanks for your help in advance. Re: Black floorboards anyone??? 40May 26, 2012 12:02 am Portabello there is a process called ebonising which darkens the floorboards much the way you would stain a board. Look it up on Google, I've never done it but I know the process exists, the process works differently on different timbers and I imagine softwoods such as pine would use a lot more of the stain than a hardwood such as tas oak which are two common flooring types in Australia. Hopefully this helps anyone looking to do this in the future. http://www.egcc.biz/workshop/e/ebonising.htm Hi All New to the forum and looking for some advice, has anyone else renovated an old miners cottage in or around Ballarat and been able to identify the flooring?
