Yes, I do agree about the stains, but the dark Augusta Lane is really too green and brown for me, I was really after a more soft dark colour if that makes sense!! In real life that colour looks quite harsh I think. Like I said if the Spring Ridge dark colour was available in Augusta Lane I would really consider it, but as it is I have to go with the nicer colour. It's not as if it's cream... and the pattern will help hide marks Re: My carpet has been discontinued help me choose another one! 42Nov 29, 2008 9:27 pm beaulieu or however they spell it are good !! there on the cheaper end of the scale, but are better quality then alot of carpets that are more $$$ than them ! and sure do wear really really well.
you say that you got some adivce from shops to go from foam to rubber. can i ask what they said? i do my best to tell people the other way around ! but platnium is good tho dont worry Re: My carpet has been discontinued help me choose another one! 44Nov 29, 2008 9:49 pm stays springy for much longer ! when there both new and looking at the samples in the shop, you cant really tell any difference, and price/your sales person will normally decide what underlay you get.
but due to the way rubber underlay is constructed, it goes flat alot quicker than foam. you can kinda see in the side on pics on page 2 how the rubber is made in kinda waves of rubber, with an air pocket between them. the rubber flattens out and then there is no air pockets, so that means far less sponge / underfoot comfort ! with foam, it doesnt have those large air pockets as its just chopped up foam like a big sponge. of course it still goes flat after a while but takes much longer! of course the rubber company/anyone trying to sell rubber wont say that and will probably tell you im wrong. But i base my decision on pulling up the stuff after years of use ! but platnium is still a good product ! just dont ever let anyone lay black rubber in your house !!! Re: My carpet has been discontinued help me choose another one! 45Nov 29, 2008 9:53 pm thanks for that steveo! I really don't remember why we chose rubber, must have been the salesperson's idea!
Would be interested to know what you think of insulated backing vs jute? Re: My carpet has been discontinued help me choose another one! 46Nov 29, 2008 10:01 pm as i say they both look good when new samples in the shop, so whatever they want to sell you they probably will.. lol
oh and not to mention that foam is recyclable ! when we pull foam up we send it back to the factory and every now and then get some free rolls. can you get a better pic of those backings ? becuase i dont think that first ones actually jute.. looks like action back from the pic ! and for the 'insulated backing' i dont even know what that is. LOL they have been sending out some funny backings latley. and i suspect its one of these new ones ! theres a few different types, most are good but there is one horrible one that i refuse to lay ! did one house in it, took twice as long as normal and was so bloody stiff we had to take it in the window becuase it wouldnt bend down the hallway ! BUT the backings wont affect anything once its laid. so you dont really need to bring the backing into your decision Re: My carpet has been discontinued help me choose another one! 47Nov 29, 2008 10:12 pm haha how funny, maybe they just made the insulation thing up!
Will try to get a better pic tomorrow, my camera doesn't work well int he dark. The insulated one just has some yellow fluffy stuff on the back, but it feels a lot thicker than the other one, which I just assumed was jute, could well be action back....kind of a rough gappy weave. Probably doesn't help the insulated one is not stiff ... as you can see from the picture it is pretty floppy. But it does look like the best quality to me. Re: My carpet has been discontinued help me choose another one! 49Dec 01, 2008 7:42 am thanks H2B you have really done your homework on this one! I wonder why I couldn't find Augusta Lane on that website?
As per steveo's post before, I'd be interested to know why you chose rubber instead of foam as your underlay H2B? Did your salesperson suggest it? Re: My carpet has been discontinued help me choose another one! 50Dec 01, 2008 10:29 am donuts thanks H2B you have really done your homework on this one! I wonder why I couldn't find Augusta Lane on that website? Yes I have hmmm, I wondered the same thing. I have spoken to the company a few times with questions donuts As per steveo's post before, I'd be interested to know why you chose rubber instead of foam as your underlay H2B? Did your salesperson suggest it? Yes they did. Shop I am going through suggested the Airstep Platinum Supreme. They said that as the foam is all little bits joined together they can break away from each other. I can understand Steveo's comment about the airpockets in the rubber going flat......can't win either way I suppose Funny though as WD said foam initially and then changed to rubber, she said rubber was better for the carpet I appreciate that everyone has different views on different products, I'm happy to listen and take this onboard. I do my homework.......I think both foam and rubber underlay sound good when you read their website. I guess I have to go with what has been recommended to me. The Rep for Vic was a carpet layer for 15 years and the owner of the shop I'm going through will install my carpet himself so I feel comfortable in what he has recommended and his shop stocks both the Bridgestone and Dunlop underlay so he must like both? Hard isn't it??? Everyone has different view and opinions. I just hope I make the right one Re: My carpet has been discontinued help me choose another one! 51Dec 01, 2008 11:05 am thanks for that I tend to do my homework after the fact
sounds like they both have their pros and cons. The Augusta Lane feels so thick and springy even without any underlay, so I'm sure we'll both be happy. Ours is being laid tomorrow so will be sure to post pics on my main thread after that. Re: My carpet has been discontinued help me choose another one! 52Dec 01, 2008 11:06 am donuts Ours is being laid tomorrow so will be sure to post pics on my main thread after that. Enjoy!!! Look forward to seeing some pics Re: My carpet has been discontinued help me choose another one! 53Dec 01, 2008 12:57 pm yeah there both good products that you wont have any worries with !
you only have problems when you go for the cheapest stuff you can get. and for the record ive never seen foam underlay break apart, even after 10 years under high school carpet. hope it goes well donuts ! Re: My carpet has been discontinued help me choose another one! 54Dec 01, 2008 2:24 pm steveo247 and for the record ive never seen foam underlay break apart, even after 10 years under high school carpet. Thanks for that. I'll take it up tomorrow with my carpet guy Re: My carpet has been discontinued help me choose another one! 56Dec 01, 2008 5:54 pm I'll just pick up on a few points here.
You said you chose Nylon over wool because of allergies. I'm not tyrying to influence your decision here and I am not neccesarily biased towards Wool. WoolSafe certified products work equally well on synthetics as well as wool. I have seen no data that supports either one being better against allergies, however lack of maintenance will certainly contribute to allergies. Most people who have allergy problems that relate to carpet are normally allergic to dust mite. More accurately, what dust mite leave behind. Dust mite eat bacteria that live on the skin flakes that we shed contiually. Carpet tends to trap these pieces of organic dust and hold them in the floor covering away from your nose. Hard floors cannot do that. Yuk you might think, but at least it gets them out of the air that you breathe. Vacuum the carpet regularly with a good quality upright vacuum cleaner and don't be afraid to have them professionally cleaned from time to time to remove the build up of fats and oils that can collect over time from sweaty feet and cooking fumes which are the two biggest contributers of fats and oils in a carpet. It is the fats and oils that bond the dust into the carpet making vacuuming more difficult. This is where professional cleaning can help you maintain a clean and healthy (and good looking) indoor environment. The carpet you are purchasing is a solution dyed nylon and is a loop pile construction. It is also made with continous fillament fibre. The most common problem with this style of carpet usually relates to the seams and yarn pulls. Seams must be "seam sealed" to prevent unravelling along joins due to the latex layer being damaged during the cutting stage. You have said that in your home you will have no seams so you are lucky in this instance that it will not be an issue. The thing to watch in a loop pile with continuous filament yarn is sharp objects like kids toys or sharp edges on high heels or furniture catching in the yarn and pulling up loops. If this should ever happen, and hopefully it doesn't, just cut them off to prevent them catching and "zippering". The solution dyeing is good in a nylon as it will help resist fading. Some will say that it is stain resistant and it is to a certain extent. You still need to be careful with cleaning chemicals. I have heard carpet retailers say that you clean it with bleach and this is just plain silly. Solution dyed nylon do resist bleaching, but I have seen many instances where they have been bleached from someone following the directions of the retailer and using bleach to clean up simple spills of water based liquids. Do not use bleach on any carpet. It will only cause problems. If you need stain removal hints then ask here and I will try to help, or look on the WoolSafe website for assistance. By the way if a spill is water soluble then it generally needs nothing more than water and some paper towels to clean it up if you get to it straight away. cheers Col Nation For information on caring for wool and other carpet and upholstery go to www.woolsafe.com.au Re: My carpet has been discontinued help me choose another one! 57Dec 01, 2008 8:34 pm Thanks so much for all the information Col Nation!
You say to use a good quality upright vacuum cleaner. We are getting a ducted vacuum, what is your opinion on these, do you think they do as good a job? Will definitely be careful with sharp things and high heels - will just treat the carpeted areas as though they were my floorboarded areas I guess can just hear myself 'kids, if you want to play with that toy, do it in the bathroom please! ' LOL Again thanks very much for all the advice Col is much appreciated.
