Browse Forums Flooring & Floor Covering 1 Dec 05, 2011 5:02 pm A word of caution to the noobs. I was starting to relax a bit and not trying to ask so many questions of tradesmen in the hope that they knew what they were doing. When I ordered my new hardwood floor i was specific in asking for water based low voc poly. Floor sander arrived this morning at 630ish. I asked this morning about water based poly and sander said yes. After sanding He then Used a quick-dry oil base sealer that stank out the house and dried in 15 mins. I should have realised when the other sander suggested i get out of the house because of the smell. It just didnt click for me until it was too late. He Then put Bona mega satin 1st top coat , it takes 2 hrs at least to dry. Left it overnight. He's Coming back tomorrow arvo to do sand/buff then re do with final top coat in Bona mega gloss. Can't get to the bottom of my test to edit! Have to reply. I dont Like the prospect of them having to resand and make my new floor thinner so I'm starting to accept that I'll have to live with the frustration and the stinky oil based poly at the bottom of my new floor. I wasn't quick enough to question why not use water based sealer. Just befor heut on the sealer I asked if it was poly at the time and he said yes. Wrong question! I hope it's ok for not edge bonding, adhesion to the top coats and hope the voc wint kill us. It looks great. Re: Water based poly over oil based sealer? 2Dec 05, 2011 5:06 pm It's annoying after I've insisted in low voc paints for the walls. I did cave into oil based gloss paint for skirtings though. Just wish I'd been more attentive and micro managing till the last. Re: Water based poly over oil based sealer? 3Dec 05, 2011 6:11 pm Dont pay. There are a couple of guys down this way who also use the solvent based sealers with the water based main coats. Aside from being unethical, it defeats the purpose of using low VOC products and also the floor will yellow over time, something that wouldn't happen if you used the Bona prime products. For the sanders its all about saving time and money. Re: Water based poly over oil based sealer? 4Dec 05, 2011 6:41 pm not paying doesn't really solve anything but $. im not inclined to get them to resand given it takes life out of the floor, and we are moving in mid dec with a whole heap of other things to do to get it ready for occupation. maybe a discount is in order and ill live with it for a decade or so. Re: Water based poly over oil based sealer? 6Dec 06, 2011 9:36 pm Weird!! Do you know the actual product name of that "quick-dry oil base sealer" that he used?? I would have thought that Bona (being water based) would not adhere properly to a solvent or oil based sealer My signature is distracting people from my wise posts ... Re: Water based poly over oil based sealer? 7Dec 08, 2011 12:29 pm Its the other way around - water on oil okay not oil on water Re: Water based poly over oil based sealer? 8Dec 08, 2011 7:24 pm Hmmm ... So, it's exactly opposite than with paints - you can't easily paint with WB paint over an oil based paint! Strange that it would be so different! Re: Water based poly over oil based sealer? 9Dec 08, 2011 7:46 pm Solvent based sealer under water based top coats can actually bring out the grain and colours on lighter timbers. My floor has a solvent based sealer under traffic for this very reason. You just need to make sure that the sealer is completely dry (preferably overnight) before you apply the top coats, or you risk bubbling of the top coat. My signature is distracting people from my wise posts ... Re: Water based poly over oil based sealer? 11Dec 09, 2011 9:59 am I personally would never put down a different primer to the sealer (always stick to the same product range). In particular a lot of clients want the Bona range because it doesn't yellow, and if you put down a solvent based primer it will yellow. Re: Water based poly over oil based sealer? 12Dec 09, 2011 10:21 am Yes, traffic over another brand of solvent based sealer. I'm sure Bona would say this is a big no no, but it is done all the time and can provide a different look to a complete water based finish if that is what is required. As long as the sealer is dry there are no problems. Having said that, I only install floors and don't finish them. My comments are based on the experience of guys with decades of floor finishing. We have never had a problem in the last 10 years with yellowing.... Please explain more of these issues to me.. I'm about to put down some Merbau.
