Browse Forums Flooring & Floor Covering 1 Sep 13, 2021 12:08 am Hi all, just joined to ask for advice about what to expect from a floor tiling restoration job by a tradie. A few months ago the tiles in my dining room went drummy and I ended up lifting about 10 square meters worth because they were tenting and the grout was coming away in places. My wife and I originally planned to re lay them ourselves, and did a fair bit of prep removing as many drummy tiles as we could and also the old tile cement underneath, which was pretty hard work. Anyway, it was one of those jobs that was dragging on and on and in the end we decided we'd had enough and should just hire a professional tile layer to pick up where we had left off and finish the job. So I posted an add on a tradie finder website and soon had a stack of emails and phone calls from prospective tilers, and I checked the reviews of all of them and then got quotes from a few that had the best reviews. I then chose a guy with good reviews who quoted less than the others, and he came and did the job a few days ago. Unfortunately I was pretty unimpressed with his work, I believe he rushed the job because many of the tiles are aligned inconsistently, with some having spacing double that of others nearby, and some edges protruding up significantly above adjacent tiles (2 or 3 mil I would say). Also, he didn't follow the instructions I gave to use some slightly different colours tiles in a certain spot where they would be covered by the fridge, instead half of them are in a fairly open and conspicuous spot. When he finished I wasn't able to inspect the work because he said not to walk on it for 24 hours, but he added some remarks that my underlying concrete pad was uneven which had made it hard for him to get some tiles flush with those alongside, he also said the tiles, being old, were also not perfectly square, and that this had made it hard for him to align them in a straight and consistent grid. I said that sounded a bit strange...that the tiles were'nt properly square, but he insisted that was the case. Another remark he made was that the job had turned out to be bigger than he expected, he normally works to a plan of being able to lay 10 square meters per day but my job had been about 12 or 13. Anyway, I couldn't properly inspect the work at that point in time so I gave him the benefit of the doubt, paid him, and off he went. Inspecting it the next day I was disappointed with the result and feel like he rushed it all. Before I get on his case though I wanted to test the idea with others who might know about whether old tiles can indeed loose their square symmetry, and also if a concrete pad can become uneven in a way that re layed tiles no longer lie flat or flush with each other. I'm pretty skeptical, but just getting some opinions from others before I post his first negative review on the tradie finder website. Any advice appreciated, thanks. renodave Re: Floor Tiling Imperfections 2Oct 27, 2021 8:39 am hi there - the tiler was probably right (concrete not being flat and old tiles are not perfectly square, especially the non rectified ones) rectification job is normally harder than just starting from scratch. also most tilers refused to provide warranty for rectification job. depending on how bad it is, you can probably raise your concern. note: good tiler / contractor should have advised you about all these before he commenced. i have had my share on tiling jobs which was done with problems and from my experience, no tilers were willing to do rectification job (i.e. to achieve that respectable finish and provide warranty, we were advised to re-do everything; level the subfloor with either self leveling / screed, before laying) CDC Housing Code 3 When to apply Floor Area external face of wall vs Gross Floor Area internal face of wall.
