We were hanging it up over a doorway, and testing the acoustic blocking properties with sound measuring equipment and a white noise generator. It was quite effective, although heavy to hang up! Maybe roller shutters outside might be a good option, apart from the obvious sound insulation in the walls and double glazing? I'm a shift worker too! Maybe thicker curtains made of sound-absorbing materials can dampen some outside noise, particularly higher-frequency sounds like barking dogs, but it can not deflect all the sounds you necessarily want.
