Browse Forums Window Furnishings 1 Jul 24, 2008 9:00 pm We are getting close to hand over and planning window furnishings.
I have a large open space room in the centre of the house, kitchen/dining/family as shown (can you tell I've just earned to edit photo-bucket images?? ), kitchen window above sink, and dining window face west and bipart doors on family room face east, there will be an alfresco area there in the future. After much thought, have decided to go vertical blinds for this area. I think all windows need to be done the same or it will look funny being so open space and obviously sliding doors need something that can be opened right up during day. Drapes are good for this but no good on kitchen window so that rules them out. Anyway, I remember reading on here a while ago that blinds or curtains should be the same colour as the walls. The walls are Stone White (which is really cream or ivory, rather than white). the kitchen cabinets are fleece, also a creamish colour, and floors are floating floors, forget the name but it is a light reddish timber look.(plan says tiles but we're not doing that) bench tops are arcante rosso, sort of dark burgundy, and splash back tiles are cream with burgundy feature ( see picture) The idea of such light blinds doesn't seem very practical, especially in the kitchen and also it seems to me that off white blinds will just look bland and insipid ; and that's from me who likes bland and the burgundy of the bench tops and row of tiles will just get 'lost in space' I was thinking burgundy verticals would look better? In my minds eye, it works, but what do you think? Is this breaking 'the rules' and would look funny? Half way through reading your post, I thought to myself "I'd go burgundy."
I've noticed a lot of homes in magazines etc are doing coloured blinds to match furnishings. Reds, etc. We were going charcoal until we changed to bare so I was also breaking the rules. Anyway, you know what they say about rules! You obviously love that burgundy and that's why you chose it for the kitchen. I think it sounds wonderful. Jo I leave you to fend for yourself, figure things out yourself. Terrence Malick Re: what colour blinds? 3Jul 24, 2008 9:45 pm Not going to comment on colour - it seems I cant get it right myself
But There is no reason you cant have a drape on the sliding door and a roller blind with pelmet that matches the drape for over the sink. I would like this better than a vertical for the sink. In fact I had drapes in the last house (before I replaced them) and drapes on the sink window that were held back with tie thingys. Paula Re: what colour blinds? 4Jul 25, 2008 5:10 pm Helyn Anyway, I remember reading on here a while ago that blinds or curtains should be the same colour as the walls. Not always correct! This depends if you want to make your room appear larger, then yes, it a good idea. In some cases…….some, dominate window dressings look great! It just depends on the room and what’s going on in it, and what look you are trying to achieve. I will have a look at this later tonight. Is that what you mean? Yes, I guess that would work. However, one thing I like about verticals is the ability to have in degrees of open, especially the windows facing west, as we can then block the afternoon sun without closing the blinds completely. The kitchen window is 20cm above the bench top and the blinds would be set within the sill, much more practical than verticall blinds on windows at bench height when the blinds get in the way. Michelle, the room is quite large, 55m2 in total and light walls and cupboards and large windows/sliding doors let in plenty of natural light, so not neccesary to make room appear larger or lighter. I have visions of whitish blinds making it appear as a large white blob of nothing- ness, to me it needs some colour to define it and I thought the best colour would be picking up the burgundy of the tiles and the bench top, which would also tie the reddish timber floor in together?? Re: what colour blinds? 6Jul 25, 2008 7:31 pm Helyn,
My preferred window dressing in a kitchen is a chain driven roller blind, they are easy to use, and you are able to pull them up away from anything messy going on beneath them. That’s just me; I have just taken photos of a house full I put in, with my new camera today. I’m as yet to set the program up to down load off the camera, when I do I will post a couple of photos, they look great. As far as the verticals’ go, they are not one of my favourite window dressings. BUT, they really do the job well!!! Now a-days they are so much better than they used to be. I’m going to be honest here, I don’t like the burgundy colour in them, but again that’s just me. The colour is very strong. You need to ask if they will fade over a period of time at the windows, most strong colours do after a while. I personally would probably go with an Ivory colour, much more sedate. Also if you put a lot of burgundy at your windows your feature tiles and bench top may get lost among all the burgundy. By keeping the window dressing neutral, you give a chance for other selections in the rooms to stand out. Might have a while to think on it as funds for extras like window furnishings need to come out of sale of our old house; could well be old sheets for a while Re: what colour blinds? 9Jul 26, 2008 9:01 am Yes that what I meant Helyn, but keep the blind a plain colour and have the tied back drape matching your other drape.
Although I see it may be verticals for you. I agree with what Mish said about the window dressings being too prominent and will take away from your feature tiles and bench top. Paula Re: what colour blinds? 10Jul 26, 2008 6:58 pm Had a talk to DH about this. He pretty well lets me do what I like with colours and such but he did say the room won't look as bland as I think, there is a lot of bench top, and at present I am seeing most of it covered with drop sheets, not in its 'full glory', also floor at present looks very dull, being grey cement, room will look very different once the reddish timber floor goes on and obviously walls won't stay so plain, as things will be put on them and furniture in room etc.
Bench tops are not really burgundy, "arcante rosso" is more of a dark earthy reddish brown, sort of the ochre red colour used in Aboriginal paintings, so DH says burgundy blinds could actually clash with benchtop, he says floor etc will soften the room and warm up the colour scheme. So, looks like ivory blinds are the way to go after all. At any rate he said wait until the floor is in, before making a decision, we are going to live in the house for years, a few weeks without blinds won't hurt us. Every now and then he does say something which makes sense. Re: what colour blinds? 11Jul 26, 2008 7:04 pm Helyn Every now and then he does say something which makes sense.
