Browse Forums Window Furnishings 1 Nov 01, 2014 12:46 pm Seriously, I don't get why people think Venetian blinds are even an option?! Venetian blinds might look "better" but that is only at the face value, vertical blind is much more useful. Vertical blinds is superior at blocking out the light while maintaining the privacy because you can control the angle and how much to pull back, Vertical blinds is better when you want to have a view while maintaining the privacy as you can control how much to pull back for the view while with the venetian you can't, you either have to sacrifice the privacy or the view you can't have both. Venetian blinds also breaks easily as the force of pulling up the blinds will loosen the screws while majority of the load is fixed at the top, and pulling up the blinds will result in the loss of privacy. Venetian blinds is also harder to clean, easier to get dirty as dusty can settle on horizontal surfaces easily compare to vertical blinds which will not. So why do people still prefer venetian blinds? "Occam's Razor. The simplest explanation is almost always somebody screwed up." Re: WHY do people like VENETIAN BLINDS? Venetian vs Vertical 2Nov 01, 2014 1:11 pm Because verticals I find butt ugly. Venetians can look great if done well. Never had privacy concerns with venetians, cleaning is hardly that onerous, never broken any. I also have no idea how you claim that verticals can have a view whilst maintaining privacy. If you can see out, people can see in?! Re: WHY do people like VENETIAN BLINDS? Venetian vs Vertical 3Nov 01, 2014 1:47 pm seano Because verticals I find butt ugly. Venetians can look great if done well. That's the thing, the perception of venetian "look better" than vertical blinds is subjective, and may very well change in the future. Quote: Never had privacy concerns with venetians, Quote: I also have no idea how you claim that verticals can have a view whilst maintaining privacy. If you can see out, people can see in?! If you want view, with vertical you can partially pull back a section of the blinds to have view while sitting in the section that's shaded by the blind which means the neighbour won't be able to see you. eg. <Neighbour's window> .................--[........................]-- <View outside> --[.............////////]-- With venetian blinds if you want view you need to pull the whole blinds up with the resulting loss of privacy. Also, with vertical blinds you can adjust the angle of the blinds to better shade against the sun's ever changing angle as it follows its path - with venetian blinds you have very very limited option to change the angle - you either blocks it completely or you don't - this is especially true in the summer when the sun is setting on a lower angle while it is still extremely hot. With vertical blinds you can simply change the direction of the angle while maintaining good lighting condition inside. Another thing, if you are building close to the neighbour - venetian blinds downstair means they can see into your house from upstair - unless you rotate the angle up which will make the room way too dark. With vertical blinds it is impossible for them to see you unless they are directly perpendicular to the direction of the blind's angle. Quote: cleaning is hardly that onerous, We have a lot of windows in this house - 21 in fact. And they are all particularly large windows (blame it on us being greedy - our builder told us since they are the top volume builder in Australia and they order heaps of windows and got the leverage on price - it makes no difference to them in term of height of the window - only the width of the window affects the price - so we in turn make sure all the windows are as large as possible vertically.) that means to clean each blade of the blinds for every one of the windows which are all particularly tall is a lot of work. Quote: never broken any. Maybe you don't pull up your blinds perhaps? The thing about venetian blinds is that you don't pull up the venetian blinds once it is installed.... even the manufacturers say so in their manual. This is ESPECIALLY TRUE for large (and tall) windows as they are very very heavy and pulling it up and down will damage the blinds easily. "Occam's Razor. I, personally, can't stand verticals! They were in our old first house (not our doing), and the one room they were in honestly felt like an office. They were light grey with the white plastic chain 'stuff' holding them together...and they just did nothing for me, nor my decorating style. In a couple of the bedrooms, we had white timber venetians installed, and they looked so much better and 'homely'. We actually re-installed them in our new house in the kids bedrooms, which means they have lasted well over 13 years, and never had a problem with them. We also installed new light weight venetians in a couple of other parts of the house, and they blend in perfectly with the remaining windows (17) all done in white plantations. Each to their own decorating tastes. If we were all the same, all our houses would be boring! Henley - Wilshire Mk 3 ... I love my house!! Venetian vs Vertical 6Nov 02, 2014 11:52 pm I've broken some venetians by being impatient and wanting to open the windows asap! That said, I've broken the chains off the verticals too when we used to live in a house with them. Then caused some folding creases in another house that didn't have the chains down the bottom of verticals but I was too much in a rush too... Lol I'm a rusher that's for sure. I agree it's subjective so my 2 cents is yes, venetians seem less practical than verticals.. But even the prettier looking venetians don't compare in looks as horizontal blinds. I love the look of plantation shutters but based on my history we'll be going curtains next house +1 each to their own --- Re: WHY do people like VENETIAN BLINDS? Another option that no1 has suggested yet.. Is no window coverings at all...? Hehe --- Re: WHY do people like VENETIAN BLINDS? Venetian vs Vertical 10Nov 03, 2014 8:00 am I've had venetians, verticals, Romans, rollers, curtains in a lot of houses over the years... They all have the their pluses and minuses. I've never struggled with venetians, except for the old metal slimline type which used to twist and contort. The verticals where the ones I suffered with most, the chains used to come off all the time. But even the chainless ones, the connectors at the top are very weak and prone to stuffing up regularly. As everyone has said, to each their own. To the OP, if you really hate venetians, just don't buy them... Be happy with your verticals and accept some people are happy with, and really like venetians.
