Browse Forums Window Furnishings 1 Jun 08, 2008 5:31 pm I'm trying to think of options for window coverings, just in case we can't afford to get my longed-for plantation shutters.
We're considering curtains, but I'm not sure the ones I would want would be much cheaper than the shutters. (I want lovely thick, heavy, lustrous ones that are properly lined and already made - I don't want to have to cut or adjust anything - and that could be pulled back either side by one of those nice roped tassle things) Anyway, so some venetian aluminium blinds look ok...to me like a cheaper, thinner and less neat or nice version of shutters. But the problem is, we need these on our big patio sliding doors. And obviously we don't want to have to be opening them up completely (meaning, lifting them up to the ceiling entirely) every time we want to go out the door or have the door open. We want them down but open most of the time, but this isn't really practical for sliding doors, is it? *sigh* Maybe I should start a charity and call it the "Donate to the Plantation Shutters Fund of Grace Slick" How the hell did I become a senior member!? I know nothing! Re: Are venetian blinds (horizontal) ok for sliding doors? 2Jun 08, 2008 5:44 pm How about vertical blinds? Re: Are venetian blinds (horizontal) ok for sliding doors? 3Jun 08, 2008 5:50 pm Verticals are an option - but I find mine are a pain.
Particularly when a bit of a breeze is blowing, you open the vertical partially - go out the door and the blinds start flapping as the wind picks them up. I'm replacing mine with curtains that can flap around without the clunking of the vertical ventions. Grace - horizontal ventions are not that practical in QLD on sliding doors because you tend to live an indoor outdoor lifestyle. Steve Re: Are venetian blinds (horizontal) ok for sliding doors? 4Jun 08, 2008 5:55 pm Yeah, I know. This is what I thought. Darn it. They'd be alright for the study window cause it's just a window, not a door. But the other doors (both lounge and master bedroom have just big glass sliding doors).
I'm completely over verticals. They're nice enough, but we've had them for the 5 years we've been renting and I want something horizontal as I feel it makes the window/room look bigger and more airy...also, they do flap in the wind a lot. They also remind me of a dental surgery for some reason. lol Con sarn it! How the hell did I become a senior member!? I know nothing! Re: Are venetian blinds (horizontal) ok for sliding doors? 6Jun 08, 2008 9:24 pm I don't like romans at all or any pull down ones. What're panel glides? Are they pull down? Re: Are venetian blinds (horizontal) ok for sliding doors? 8Jun 08, 2008 10:09 pm I actually like the slim line look of vertical blinds better than panel glides which I find big and bulky looking. Am planning to do vertical blinds myself, I like the way you can angle them in degrees of open or have pulled part way across, but I take on board what others are saying about flapping in the wind.
Depends on whether you would have window open with blinds drawn, I guess. Anyway, Grace, if you are already over verticals, I guess I'm not much help Re: Are venetian blinds (horizontal) ok for sliding doors? 9Jun 08, 2008 10:14 pm verticals are incredibly practical
it is a shame they arent the latest in thing now cos I do find them really good the way you can have some privacy/some view etc you can get them weighted on the bottom which helps the flapping Re: Are venetian blinds (horizontal) ok for sliding doors? 10Jun 09, 2008 11:18 am Why not a roller blind?
You can pull it up to get through the sliding door, pull it down for privacy or just have it half mast for a contempoary look. Vanderlay posted a pic of his in another blind thread and they look great!
