I am considering putting white plantation shutters on our alfresco sliding door. This is in the same room as two windows which will have white wooden venetian blinds. Has anyone seen this before? Do you think it will work or will it look weird? They will all be white. The room is an open plan kitchen, family, dining area that opens onto the alfresco. I don't think venetian blinds on a sliding door is very practical (we have a toddler) - and I feel the plantation shutters will be the sturdiest option for a sliding door. Thank you in advance. Re: Plantation shutters and venetian blinds in same room? 2Mar 17, 2014 6:59 pm It could work - but won't plantation shutters be awkward on/with the sliding doors ? Re: Plantation shutters and venetian blinds in same room? 3Mar 17, 2014 7:03 pm Would they be awkward? I haven't seen them in real life - only online. I thought they would be less awkward than venetians which go up and down as you can get shutters that slide across. But, I don't know. I'd love to hear if someone has them and thinks they are awkward or not. Re: Plantation shutters and venetian blinds in same room? 4Mar 19, 2014 9:39 am joyfulbuilder Would they be awkward? Re: Plantation shutters and venetian blinds in same room? 5Mar 19, 2014 10:04 am Hi joyfulbuilder, Yes plantation shutters are usually hinged rather than sliding. You may need to come up with some clever edge detail so that they can be fitted to sliding tracks. Good luck! Need hints, tips and inspiration? I'll have to suss out the options more carefully. Re: Plantation shutters and venetian blinds in same room? 7Mar 19, 2014 11:06 am Given the size you're probably going to be better off with the aluminium rather than timber version of plantation shutters, they'll be easier to open, either as stackers or bifold (i'd go bifold as with the stacker arrangement you will most likely have to close the blades when they're all stacked so they don't scratch the face of the other) and more durable than the timber ones that are likely to flex a lot given their weight and size. I don't think the aluminium ones look quite as nice though. http://camdenbuild.blogspot.com.au/ by invite only please pm me Re: Plantation shutters and venetian blinds in same room? 8Mar 19, 2014 11:09 am I didn't think of that (having to close them to stack them) - thank you. Maybe PVC venetians are a better option. Has anyone had these with toddlers? Did they survive or do they break? I currently have aluminium venetians and they are now dented. Re: Best window treatment for sliding door? (kid friendly) 9Mar 19, 2014 11:38 am We had a PVC one in our last kitchen and it fared better than the basswood ones, still a bit of flex in them though be good if a supplier could let you see one in the flesh of a similar size or offer some guarantee. http://camdenbuild.blogspot.com.au/ by invite only please pm me Re: Best window treatment for sliding door? (kid friendly) 10Apr 08, 2014 8:29 am I have plantations mostly through my home, but didn't get them installed on my 3 panel sliding stacker. It just wasn't feasible. The stacker door slides from left to right, and the plantations would need to as well. They would have needed to be bifold, and most likely installed in a track system, but we have floating floors and could have been tricky. Also when the plantations are fully open, the 'stack' of the shutters together would have been huge, and interfered with our meals area seating, as they poke out into the room. I am going for roman blinds instead. You can see here why it wasn't feasible from where the table and chairs are... Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Henley - Wilshire Mk 3 ... (kid friendly) 11Apr 08, 2014 12:02 pm Ah thank you Stormy! I can see why it wasn't feasible. I am leaning towards roman blinds or PVC venetians at this stage. I am not sure how the venetians will go with little ones..... however roman blinds might get grubby finger marks on them in our house (of very little ones). I am sort of regretting getting a slider because of the window treatment situation - wish I'd gone against the current trend and gotten a regular back door. Re: Best window treatment for sliding door? (kid friendly) 12Apr 08, 2014 3:52 pm Very little ones will be very little only for a short amount of time! I'd go romans. Only put them down to a level where the babies can't reach them until they are settled for the night. Its what we do with our dog until she's gone to bed for the night lol Re: Best window treatment for sliding door? (kid friendly) 13Apr 28, 2014 4:03 pm I am still deciding about this. I still have at least 5 years of little ones and their sticky fingers with one on the way and another one planned for after that. Some people have advised me that roman blinds can be an issue on a slider as there is an overlap at the top (so tall people need to duck to get through). Is this is an issue for anyone here? Another has just said timber venetians are the worst thing you can put on a slider. The most commonly recommended seems to be regular roller blinds..... and one random person said don't put anything on them and get the doors tinted for privacy (which I think is clever but I don't think it would feel right to me). Is this is an issue for anyone here? Only if they are installed too low. They should be installed above the window so that isn't an issue. Re: Best window treatment for sliding door? (kid friendly) 15Apr 28, 2014 4:13 pm We have a roller blind on the sliding door in our rental and it's a huge pain - you have to either duck under it or roll it all the way up above your head. I've had drapes on sliding doors before which worked well (they slide in one direction instead of from the centre like on a normal window). We're going to have panel glide blinds on our sliding doors - cheapies from Ikea at first and then upgrade to customs once the boys are bit older. ~ Anne I used to be indecisive but now I'm not quite sure. Thank you Re: Best window treatment for sliding door? (kid friendly) 17Jul 02, 2014 3:08 pm Thank you everyone for contributing here - this was a big decision for me. We ended up choosing a sliding door plantation shutter. We found a company in Perth that does shutters that can have the slats totally open when they slide, so we will never have a drama of hitting the slats. They aren't installed yet - still waiting for our house to be complete. Re: Best window treatment for sliding door? It worked, sturdy, not intrusive and looked good. The sliding door only had one retractable panel though so it is smaller than stackers that we'll have (3x panels). Also depends if there's anyone that does them here! --- Re: Best window treatment for sliding door? The sliding door shutters stack on top of each other and you can open/ close them when the slats are open or closed and they do not bang into each other. They do stick out a fair bit, but that is not an issue for us as we have plenty of space in that area. Very happy.
