Browse Forums Pools & Spas 1 Apr 26, 2020 4:05 pm Hi all. I am bolting fence posts on top of a tiles on a concrete slab. I was planning to just drill through the tiles and slab and use 100mm dynabolts to fix the post base to the tile/slab. I am just a little concerned about cracking the tiles when I tighten the dynabolts down. I've seen some youtube videos of people bolting fence spigots to/through tiles and they didnt seem to have any issues. Reckon its safe? I thought about cutting a square out of the tile so the post bracket sits on the slab but cutting a square in tiles might be tricky- to do this i'd use a diamond disc on grinder but i think the edge of the cut would be visible outside the post as you have to cut past the cutout area usually when using a cutting wheel. Any tips would be great. Thanks. Re: How to bolt steel post to tile on slab 2Apr 26, 2020 4:19 pm Dyna bolts expand to secure into the concrete. This expansion happens at the very end of the fixing, so in you instance 100mm into the concrete. You will have no issues with the tiles cracking due to the Dyna bolts. Just make sure your fixing isn't longer than the depths of the concrete. If the concrete is 100mm thick I'd use 75mm Dyna bolts. Drilling the holes can be an issue however, depending on the tiling job and what sort of drill you use. Best thing to do is use a new sharp masonry drill bit and just drill through the tile without using the hammer function. Drill all the holes through the tiles first and then once that is done turn on the hammer function and drill the concrete. That way the sharp bit will cut through the tiles before you blunt it on the concrete. Thanks for the input. Maybe i'm wrong but I thought the dynabolt spreads against the concrete when the wide end of the bolt is pulled upward - by tightening the nut down - hence pulling the wide end up and pressing the sleeve outward. So the tightening nut is putting a lot of downward force onto the tile(usually concrete). So this is where my concern is - cracking the tile when the dynabolt nut is tightened down onto tile. Re: How to bolt steel post to tile on slab 4Apr 26, 2020 5:38 pm The nut tightens on the plate, bracket or washer which spreads the load over a large area. In your situation it's spread over a large area of the plate so the tiles will be fine.
