Browse Forums Pools & Spas 1 Mar 16, 2015 8:44 pm Hi, I am in the market for a pool pump and have seen quite a few pumps on the market that claim to be eco "EFFICIENT" with running costs. I read that a "Typical" (Whatever that means) size pool annual running cost would cost around $1,200 to run where as an eco equivalent would only cost $90 to run the whole year. This is apparently achieved with brush less technology and the pump runs much slower over a greater time per day. My pool plumber told me that this is all marketing hype and that the cost of such a pump is not worth the investment. Can anyone share their experiences? Thanks Andrew My Swimming Pool Build. The general rule is that the best way in saving operational costs is to specify pumps that run the system as slowly as possible while still meeting peak flows. Although it is possible to build pumping stations with two large pumps (one to run and the other as standby) it is often better to build stations with three or more lower capacity pumps, or install variable speed drives. Typical payback for the substantial initial additional cost can be as little as one year. The Harder You Try - the Luckier You Get ! Re: Eco Pool Pumps vs single speed power guzzlers 3Mar 19, 2015 8:23 pm I would suggest looking at a variable speed drive pump. If you conduct a You Tube search there is a clip comparing the efficiency of a variable speed pump with a standard type of pump. I recall it is american, but the principles apply. I would also recommend contacting the swimming pools and spa's association in your state. They have some great info. Re: Eco Pool Pumps vs single speed power guzzlers 4Mar 19, 2015 9:43 pm It totally depends on what it is operating. If it is a basic pool instillation without water features , infloor cleaning etc a single quality speed pump with brushless motor draws exactly the same as A variable speed . You need to check flow rates for chlorinators & heaters when running a variable speed as they may not work on lowest speeds . The comparisons are between the worst single speed pump with worn bearings & poor hydraulic design against the best case for the other . I use both types but spend some time with each job evaluating merits of both. I have no idea which brand is good and which one is not. All feedback appreciated. Thanks Andrew Re: Eco Pool Pumps vs single speed power guzzlers 7Mar 21, 2015 8:54 pm Waterco is a Australian owned asx listed company. I have always insisted on waterco equipment for my pools.
