Browse Forums Pools & Spas 1 Jan 18, 2016 1:43 am Hi everyone, I am new here. We have a bit of a dilemma. We have a small backyard and got a quote for a pool. We were not sure if it would fit in our tiny yard. The guy came out all positive, yep, yep, no problem can fit a 2.2 by 8m pool. We were excited. Organised some more quotes and money. Another company said no but they had a bigger pool 8.3.by 2.5. He said it would be too close to the house and can cause foundation problems. So we rang another who told us the same thing. Well, bit annoyed with the first guy for not bringing this up, he was all no problem, no issues at all. Which leads to my question.. Can we reinforce the foundation? Is it worth it, money wise? Has any one done it with an already established house? Who should I ask to come in to give advice? I have seen the resin that you can put in to strengthen the soil, then there are pilings etc. Has anyone put a pool close to the house? Can you find out how deep your foundations is from the council or do I have to get a surveyor in to find this out? Anyone know how much that will cost. It all seems too hard but with three kids who would get a lot of use out of the pool I don't want to give up without exploring all the options Hope someone can help, give advice. Thanks in advance. Re: Pool too close to house... 2Jan 18, 2016 6:55 am Hi, We are newly building a house and our pool is 1.2m from the alfresco. So we had to put additional piering in this area so that it does not cause any damage with the foundation. So probably some truth in what some of the pool companies are telling you. Not sure about your council but you don't lodge engineering plans with the council. Our council does not have any info on how deep our foundation is. Perhaps a structural engineer can help? Speak to a few and see if they can assist. viewtopic.php?t=78985 Re: Pool too close to house... 3Jan 18, 2016 9:40 am Megangr Hi everyone,'..... Welcome to the forum Megangr Who should I ask to come in to give advice? A structural Engineer Megangr I have seen the resin that you can put in to strengthen the soil, then there are pilings etc. Yes, but you then may have problems & additional costs with Hard digging Megangr Has anyone put a pool close to the house? You can put the perimeter external wall on the pool wall if you wish? It will involve underpinning the external load bearing walls for existing Houses and Piling for new houses. Megangr Can you find out how deep your foundations is from the council or do I have to get a surveyor in to find this out? Anyone know how much that will cost. Here in WA the council Should have your House engineering footing details. Thanks in advance. I put a concrete pool in 25 years ago cost $40K, and my 4 kids & friends grew up playing Backyard pool cricket, those memories are priceless.. I agree explore all options Try not to get suckered in with photos of the finished product by salesman most clients arent shown the hidden/buried costs upfront Designer,Engineer (Civil,Const & Envir),Builder,Concrete & Masonry Contract.Struct Repairs Re: Pool too close to house... 4Jan 18, 2016 9:53 am Building a swimming pool is not rocket science Your selected pool builder will have working relationship with engineering company that will do structural design for the pool. Typically they will visit the site assess problems and risk and craft a solution. If pool is too close to the home then underpinning of existing footings will be required. Be careful though with screw piles because one of my clients has leaking salt pool and the long term effect on screw piles will be corrosion. Your pool builder is likely to have done it before so ask and get in contact with owners where it has been done. I have made contact with the council and the pool builder. We have another meeting with the pool guy tomorrow to find a solution. The council also informed me that the pool does not need to be 1 m from the boundary fence, which was interesting as the pool people have all said that was the rule. Having that extra space will make it a little easier, plus having the deep end switched around so the deep end is further from the house boundary makes me feel a little better. Thanks again, hopefully all goes well tomorrow. Re: Pool too close to house... 6Jan 20, 2016 9:15 am Megangr Thank you so much for all your advice and for the welcome. Great, Some pool salesman ask for a deposit at that stage and considering your build is difficult/complex. May I suggest you take on board his comments, ask for clarification, costings, etc, etc and seek further advice on the underpinning. I generally recommend getting at least 3 Quotes before you commit. The problem with dealing with salesman is they will say only what's required to bring the deal in, in which case other things get initially forgotten... Other things to consider & discuss 1. Foundation/Soils 2. Formwork and accessibility. 2. Piling or Deep foundations under the pool wall 3. Long term maintenance, adjacent structures, eg effects of chlorine/salt on Alum/glass windows, durability etc 4. Always get sample specifications & Engineering drawing and what is said in writing 5. Warranty etc,etc BTW Boundary pools require additional rebar and thickening -> Costs?
