Browse Forums Pools & Spas 1 Sep 20, 2013 4:26 pm Hi, I hope there isn't a limit to the number of questions you can ask in one post if there is I might be thrown off on my first post We are having our pool area renovated and have been given different advice from every tradesman or salesman we have spoken to. We bought the house and the pool was already installed but the landscaping is a terrible DIY job. So some advice would be appreciated. Our project is: We have a fibreglass pool (the current paving and landscaping is a mess) We are wanting to pave/tile about 60 sqm plus new coping around the pool We want to install glass pool fencing (semi frameless) around the pool We have drainage issues because of the block next door is approx 1mtr higher and we get all the run off from their block into our pool Questions: Paving/Tiling - we have had 2 landscapers and a paving guy out to look at the job (all told us different things). So we are not sure if we should be buying pavers and laying on a road base foundation, if so what thickness of pavers do we need? Or should we be concreting (how thick?) and laying thinner pavers or tiles? Waterline Tiles - we have received conflicting advice as to whether we can have mosiac waterline tiles because our pool is fibreglass (has anyone else done this?) Coping - we have been told by one guy we have to have bullnose coping?? we wanted a square edge coping. The sales people at the pool tile shop said we can have whatever we want? Drainage - Two landscapers said we should use grates (long ones with stainless steel grates on top) to fix our drainage problems. The plumber said there won't be enough gradient and we should be using pits with underground pipes that connect to the storm water pipes. The plumber also said if the grates are not done properly they will hold water and cause mossies etc. Termite barrier - our house has a granite termite barrier but one landscaper said we should have an additional barrier put in where the paving will come up to the house (our house is brick). He hasn't provided advice on what this should be yet or how much it will cost? Has anyone else had to do this? Glass pool fencing - The pool fencing installer said we need to earth the post that will be less than 1.2mtr from the water (this seems reasonable to me) but has anyone done this or had different advice? Slip Resistance - every shop we have been to (and there are many) have given us different advice in relation to the slip rating required around a pool. One guy told us it has to be R12, another said it doesn't matter with stone, another said R10 would be fine. One even told us the R ratings are not important?? This is the kind of look we want - light coloured pavers with blue mosiac tiles and glass fencing http://www.pooltile.com.au/PhotoGallery ... rfall1.htm http://www.pooltile.com.au/PhotoGallery ... dMint1.htm If anyone has any advice or can share what has worked for them that would be great - TIA Re: Pool Tile & Landscaping Confusion - help needed 2Sep 21, 2013 6:28 am KCamp Hi, Questions: Paving/Tiling - we have had 2 landscapers and a paving guy out to look at the job (all told us different things). So we are not sure if we should be buying pavers and laying on a road base foundation, if so what thickness of pavers do we need? Or should we be concreting (how thick?) and laying thinner pavers or tiles? Concrete base would be best option, then tile or pave Waterline Tiles - we have received conflicting advice as to whether we can have mosiac waterline tiles because our pool is fibreglass (has anyone else done this?) Yes possible just more preperation Coping - we have been told by one guy we have to have bullnose coping?? we wanted a square edge coping. The sales people at the pool tile shop said we can have whatever we want? Your choice, just be aware if you chose a tiles, you will need bullnose or a thicker paver that will match Drainage - Two landscapers said we should use grates (long ones with stainless steel grates on top) to fix our drainage problems. The plumber said there won't be enough gradient and we should be using pits with underground pipes that connect to the storm water pipes. The plumber also said if the grates are not done properly they will hold water and cause mossies etc. Very site specific, grates can be used with the addition of sub drainage to fall to grade Termite barrier - our house has a granite termite barrier but one landscaper said we should have an additional barrier put in where the paving will come up to the house (our house is brick). He hasn't provided advice on what this should be yet or how much it will cost? Has anyone else had to do this? Unless they are breaching the barrier? Glass pool fencing - The pool fencing installer said we need to earth the post that will be less than 1.2mtr from the water (this seems reasonable to me) but has anyone done this or had different advice? Must be done Slip Resistance - every shop we have been to (and there are many) have given us different advice in relation to the slip rating required around a pool. If you are concreting to lay tiles I was told by our last pool builder (concrete) that it can't abutt the shell of the pool as it can compromise the integrity of the pool. I'm not sure in your case what this means for fiberglass. The main reason people choose coping is easier to climb out if the paver doesn't have an edge and is rounded. This is preference , if it was me i would try to choose a paver with no harsh edge finishes Building McDonald Jones Bronte Manor One Contracts Signed Dec 12 DA Lodged Jan 13 DA Consent w/BAL40 Apr 13. Re: Pool Tile & Landscaping Confusion - help needed 4Sep 21, 2013 10:21 am Scotty, you just need an expansion joint between shell and slab Landscape Design & Construction http://cherub.squarespace.com/ Re: Pool Tile & Landscaping Confusion - help needed 5Sep 21, 2013 1:36 pm tiling fiberglass waterline involves scoring the jell coat and then as per usual...select the appropriate glue. use any bull-nose / square paving you want. the expansion joint mentioned in previous repy is essential. Re: Pool Tile & Landscaping Confusion - help needed 6Sep 21, 2013 6:17 pm Concrete base is best around pool area square edge or bullnose is your choice. As your pool is already in you can disregard other wrong info regarding gap between pool shell & concrete. Fitting waterline tiles to a fibreglass pool is fine when using the correct adhesive Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ . We had a lot of trial & error with this & now import a product from the us as we had no success with any local products. It is a silicone based adhesive & grout in one .if you are in sydney I can give you my tilers details. Se pic below for a fibreglass pool with tiles Re: Pool Tile & Landscaping Confusion - help needed 7Sep 21, 2013 9:55 pm Thanks a lot for all the info, very useful. We had another landscaper out this morning to give us a quote he suggested we use a road base with pavers but I'm not convinced at all. I just found a concretor near us that does concreting and tiling - so I might call him on Monday and see what he says, he has a lot of similar projects (pool renovations) on his website. We removed all the old pavers, timber decking and pool coping today and there is already a concrete strip at the edge of the fibreglass so it looks like it's too late to add an expansion joint. We are not breaking the termite barrier so I'm not sure what the guy had in mind but he hasn't got back to me with his quote so I'll see what he says. The pictures of the waterline tiles look great, pretty much what we are looking for - light coloured stone pavers with blue mosiacs. We are in Brisbane so I'll see what this concretor says on Monday as he does internal and external tiles too so hopefully he'll know what he is doing (Fingers crossed). Thanks for the offer of your tiler though. I'll try and work out how to post pictures on this and show some photos of the job. Thanks again Hi All, see above image. The required setback from the rear boundary in my case is 5m, as you can see the shape of the site and location of the boundary is slightly… 0 8333 Hmmm, I have checked your past posts and it seems that you are in NSW, not WA as I had thought. It pays to show your State in your avatar.
