Browse Forums Pools & Spas 1 Mar 05, 2012 12:14 pm Let me thank everyone for the great help I have received off this site for the past 2 years as we have embarked on numerous home improvements. We now seem to have gotten ourselves to a stage where it just doesn't work and so I finally joined - and by that I mean our home. We are looking at the 3 options in terms of moving (least preferred), reno or knock down rebuild. Been to all the display centres but have an issue. Have a pretty standard 18m wide block by 32m. Current setback is 7m but think would pass at 5 if we apply. We put in a fibreglass inground pool in back right hand corner some 18months back and now want to try and fit a house round it. I have read a couple of threads with this type but they only seem to discuss concrete pools What I want to know is how close can I build to an inground fibreglass pool? I have read regarding extra support etc to foundations but have got a little lost on whether this is referring to stumps under the house or reinforced concrete slabs. We would be starting from scratch as knocking down and our current favourite house design takes us pretty close to pool edge. Is there a minimum setback? Would reinforcing the slab(?) solve our issue? Kind of not real trusting of the house salesmen as we found with the pool they are your friends till you sign the line and then you hear the real story. Thinking will need to contact council and engineer but advice given would be so appreciated. Exciting time but way too much to know Phil Re: Fibreglass pools and building a new home - how close? 2Mar 05, 2012 1:15 pm I would still be trying to discuss this with the company who supplied & installed your pool. We have a recently put in a fibreglass pool by Narellan & wouldn't hesitate to contact them if we were in your situation. The big concern, I would think, is not the fibreglass shell so much, because that has quite a bit of flex, but the concrete they then put around the shell to keep it stable. If that develops a crack anywhere (due to vibration etc.) then you've potentially got a real problem. "Whoever says sunshine brings happiness has never danced in the rain!"
