Hi
What are the pros and cons of Concrete vs Fibreglass pools?
Cost aside, which would you choose?
Thanks!

Do a search for fibreglass concrete pool and you will find many different responses. I have previously owned a fibreglass pool (put in by previous home owners) which was fantastic. We loved it and will be putting one in our new home. My cousin put a concrete pool in her home 12months ago (she went for concrete because she was after a specific shape and size) - it was interesting to hear her say if she did it again she would do a fibreglass pool - mostly because the concrete is quite rough and the kids don't like the feel of it. Something that I copied from another post (not me - wheeliworks) concrete has 1 advantage over fibreglass. any shape, size or depth. Fibreglass has many advantages 1. Warranty 2. Instilation Time 3. Estimated Chemical Usage Surface does not alter water's chemical balance. Substantially fewer chemicals used on fibreglass pool. Plaster reacts with water to raise pH levels. Uses substantially more acid & chlorine to counterbalance this. 4. Surface Texture Fibreglass is Smooth, non-abrasive to skin or swim suits, walking and seating areas are textured for slip resistance. 5. Algae Penetration Algae sweeps off with wall brush. Algae grows and is harbored in pores of gunite. Acid baths and scrubbing required to remove algae. 6. Major Renovation never required on fibreglass but needed apx every 7 years on a concrete pool 7. Quality Control fibreglass is Manufctured in environmentally controlled factory under stringent quality control standards. 8 fibreglass can cope with ground movement . concrete will crack Not my words but from what I have read it seems to be fairly accurate info. Good luck Re: Concrete Pool Vs Fibreglass Pool 4Jan 20, 2012 10:02 am I've had both and I would choose fibreglass hands down (much for the same reasons as stated above). With concrete you can leave it bare, or go pebblecrete but both can be rough and prone to staining. Fully tiled concrete pools look great and are kind on feet but its expensive to do and there's the maintenance - tiles do come loose, grout discolours etc. And besides, fibreglass pools now have some fantastic colours and shapes to choose from. Ours present pool is done in Bermuda Blue which we love but there's a relatively new colour out now called Coral Blue which is gorgeous! Plus, a fibreglass pool can be installed much quicker than concrete - you can be swimming in it in under a month from the hole being dug. Re: Concrete Pool Vs Fibreglass Pool 5Jan 20, 2012 4:31 pm Dear Reader, There are, like anything, pro's and con's for any product out there. To cut as direct to the chase as possible, a concrete pool is winner by a long shot. I have installed both for over 30 years both with my company and as an apprentice for two sydney based installers. Concrete pool are limited only by budget and imagination, even then you can still install a hassle free finished product. You just have to be careful with which company you go for. We dont build anymore, undercutting and poor workmaship by other builders has seen this side of the industry struggle, as most customers look at the cheapest price. We stick to renos and resurfacing. There are a few main things you need to get right when choosing concrete pools and you will be guarenteed to enjoy it for 25+ years, and the good thing about it is that fibreglass you cant is that you can change the interior or tiling inside later if need be to modernise and update it. ANyway heres some things to help: - When going for coping around pool, dont use clay/brick-based pavers; they move and expand alot and will cause cracking and drumming of interior and paving - Travertine provides an awesome colour and is very hardy around pool; doesnt break down like sandstone/limestone finishes -When installing coping ensure expansion joints in coping are every 2-3m and if you have concrete coming up to pool expansion joints must be added here to -There are many ultra smooth interior options, 1mm New Zealand pebble is almost as smooth as tiling or fibreglass linings -When choosing sanitisations methods spend a little extra and go for Magna pool. Inspired by healing spring water in Germany the product is ultra safe on skin and the concrete shell itself. You can even water your plants with it! This ensures your interior or tiles wont have calcium issues or have the salt eat away the interior as it doesnt use salt. -Concrete pools add value to a house. Lets face it, how often do you see a fibreglass pool as a selling point for a house on the market? Hope this help Best Regards Re: Concrete Pool Vs Fibreglass Pool 6Jan 29, 2012 6:01 pm [quote="Ero Pool Renovations"]Dear Reader, t. -Concrete pools add value to a house. Lets face it, how often do you see a fibreglass pool as a selling point for a house on the market? to answer your question lots. a concrete pools only advantage is choice of size , depth , & shape. yes a concrete pool can be renovated which is a good thing because they need to be. a typical reno will cost as much or more than a new fibreglass pool. it good to see concrete pools can now have a finish which almost as good a gel coat cheers andrew To my understanding early saw cuts are to control shrinkage cracks, so doing them now would be pointless. Control joints may reduce ugly cracking during periods of soil… 3 9862 |
