Browse Forums Pools & Spas 1 Feb 10, 2011 10:14 am G'day all whilst I am investigating options for a new pool, lots of info is available for fencing laws etc, but can not find info about any requirements for space around a pool, inside the pool fence area I have spoken to a few certifiers and have conflicting info, none could provide or point me to any relevant documents, laws etc, (state federal or local) I have very limited room, hence this could be a big issue for me! QLD, Brisbane -( Logan CC) Any advise would be great! Re: How close can I build my pool fence to my pool??? 2Feb 10, 2011 10:34 am I would have thought that you could build it straight onto the perimeter? There have been pictures in magazines that I have seen years ago built that way. Plus some people have their pool as close as possible to one side of their property to get maximum land on the other side. Some things are worth waiting for. Re: How close can I build my pool fence to my pool??? 3Feb 10, 2011 11:00 am I know when I investigated with my local council (Blacktown in Sydney) they had a guideline of 1.5m. This was to allow access around the the pool for safety and cleaning purposes. This is just a guideline though so it can be negotiated with the building inspectors - who in my area are very receptive and helpful. I might call another certifier and tell them that its all done, see what the response is! Thanks again! Re: How close can I build my pool fence to my pool??? 6Feb 11, 2011 5:41 pm update: After talking to the local council and another certifier, it is evedent this is not regulated The Cert guys would like to see an area where someone could be dragged to if resuscitation was required, the area that was quoted to me was 500mm X 2m The earlier info I got was 1.2m to 1.5m around the whole pool, but the source of this info would not show any evidence! ... I will have 500mm on 3 of the 4 sides, and over 1m on the open side, so im ok to build! Thanks again for the responses Re: How close can I build my pool fence to my pool??? 7Feb 11, 2011 7:18 pm Hi Trojan, I will be doing a similiar thing when we begin our pool in May/June. Three sides of our pool will be 300mm from the fence and the fourth side will be 3000mm. Haven't had this approved or anything yet but don't see why there should be any problems with this. Re: How close can I build my pool fence to my pool??? 8Feb 13, 2011 11:36 am There is no specific rule the BCA just recommends that pool fences not be so close as to encourage them to be used as a device in which to jump from and that enough room should be allowed so that a person can access the area in case of a rescue or words to that effect. Re: How close can I build my pool fence to my pool??? 9Feb 22, 2011 3:04 pm I am getting pool quotes at the moment and was told the pool gate must have 1.2mtr clearance to open. As for the fence, I have seen some where the pool wall continues as the fence on 1 side. Re: How close can I build my pool fence to my pool??? 10Feb 22, 2011 3:32 pm The 1.2m clearance for pool gates may well be correct. Not really an issue for me as I'll be having a 1.8 clearance for one side of the pool (which will have pool gate). The other three sides will all be 300mm clearance between fence and pool edge. Re: How close can I build my pool fence to my pool??? 11Feb 26, 2011 9:46 am Ok...Ive got another question I hope people can help me with. We are putting a water feature (waterfall) right next to our adjoining fence. When I say 'right next to', I mean practically touching. The waterfall is 800mm in depth and is 1200mm tall. We are actually upgrading our adjoining fence to Colourbond, the standard size being 1800mm tall. This means there will be 600mm above the waterfall to the top of the fence. Is this an issue? Our neighbours don't have a pool, nor do they really have room for one. I know there has to be a zone of 900mm of climable objects but that is from the 'non-pool' side. This is really the only spot for the waterfall so I really hope this is not an issue. If anyone can shed any information on this it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! Whilst this reply is probably too late for the original post, for others, you need to be aware that any fence of conductable material e,g, steel, aluminium etc that is within "arms reach" of 1.25m from the pool edge must be earth bonded to the house earth system.
