Hi, Opinions please. Do I include a pool for the grandchildren in my new build? Would it be enjoyable or would I just stress about the dangers and the cost of running it?
Thanks,

You will have to attend to it weekly at a minimum for something in summer, be it cleaning or chemicals, and often twice a week. Also, kids get cold quickly, so you might want a heater as well. You will indeed have to keep an eagle eye on the little vegemites, who can disappear and give you heart failure every ten seconds. You will need a good pool fence which gives you confidence. The type with 100 mm vertical bars I believe can be climbed by an acrobatic child. When it comes to resale (but you may not care) a significant proportion of buyers will be discouraged by the presence of a pool. You could go around to a local estate agents and ask for an informed opinion on that. How far away are you from the grandchildren? How often would they swim? How far are you from a public pool or beach as an alternative? Having said all that, they will love a pool. You will have to get in too and they will want to visit often. What about a large non-permanent pool, the water from which can be emptied on the garden? Cheers Re: Pools 4Jan 23, 2011 1:13 pm I'd agree. If the Grandchildren are over all the time and still quite young so may enjoy for say 10 years yet, it may just be worth it. But otherwise, I would not bother. Note that electricity and chemicals to run a pool will cost you around $30 a week when the pool is being used so it not cheap. As for selling, some people won't buy a place with a pool, but for others, particularly people with young kids, it can be a great selling point. Re: Pools 5Jan 23, 2011 2:20 pm We have a large pool & separate spa, I never use it but my husband does - he loves it, I view it as a big water feature An alternative would be to just have a spa cheaper to run and maybe you'd get more use out of it as it would be easier to maintain and of course you can heat it even in the winter? Re: Pools 6Jan 23, 2011 8:44 pm I agree also. If your grandchildren are going to be over a lot then they'd absolutely love the pool. 6 2994 |
