Browse Forums Pools & Spas 1 Nov 25, 2010 3:47 pm Our pool has been inground now for 6 months. On the weekend my husband noticed a spot that wouldn't clean, when he got in the pool to investigate he found that it appeared to be a drilled hole, he put a leaf over it to see if any water was leaking from it, but it doesn't appear so. It's approx 5 mm wide. It looks unsightly, I rang the pool supplier/installer and he said that this was normal, it was part of the manufacturing process and there would be about 5 others in the pool too (which we have not found). He said not to worry. But it's niggling away, we had a fibreglass pool growing up and never remembered seeing these before. I will attach a photo to give you an idea of what it looks like. Does anyone out there know if this is normal? Many thanks. Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Re: Is this normal? Perfectly drilled hole in new f/glass po 3Nov 25, 2010 8:39 pm hi jaelee it is probably a round depression in the gel coat about the size of a 5 cent peice . the manufacture is correct . a sticker is placed on the mould prior to spraying the first layer. ompressed air is injected into hole to release pool from mould. when the pool comes off the mould the sticker is removed. this leaves this mark. a 9m pool will have about 8 of these. they are usually hard to see if sticker is left on it goes grey & looks like it is domaged. hope this helps cheers andrew Re: Is this normal? Perfectly drilled hole in new f/glass po 4Nov 25, 2010 8:48 pm i just loaded the pic on my computor. it looks like the sticker is still on. you may need a knife to remove it. then rub off sticky bit cheers andrew Re: Is this normal? Perfectly drilled hole in new f/glass po 5Nov 25, 2010 11:52 pm Thank you so much for this information, it has put our minds to rest a bit. Will investigate further when in the pool next to see if we can feel a sticker. Will keep you posted. Re: Is this normal? Perfectly drilled hole in new f/glass po 7Dec 16, 2010 4:58 pm Update: Since posting we have been losing water from the pool at an alarming rate (2-3 inches each day) my husband bought some aqua putty and plugged the hole that I had previuosly posted about as he felt it must be coming from there. When it was first installed it never lost this much water, but these last few weeks is losing heaps. After plugging this "hole" in question the pool stopped losing water. We rang the pool company back to tell them about the loss of water and our uneasiness of having this "hole". They said it was impossible to be a hole, pool would have been half empty overnight. They still said, without even looking at the hole in question, that it was the manufacturing process that formed this hole, but I don't think it is. I said how can you explain the water loss, then suddenly after plugging the hole it stops. They gave me another number to ring. My husband rang this time, and he was told it was probably a leakage hole if the pool was in the yard for a while, they drill a hole for drainage, then seal it up when the pool is sold. I believe this is what has happened to us, and the seal eventually worked loose or dissolved. We were not very impressed with the follow up service after outlaying so much money for a pool. Someone is going to come out and look at it, but not until after christmas and even then it was under duress. Re: Is this normal? Perfectly drilled hole in new f/glass po 8Dec 17, 2010 10:38 am We had a similar problem in a fibreglass pool in our last house. They apparently drilled holes for the solar heating in the wrong place, then filled them before the pool was installed. After a few months two black rings appeared on the pool wall . After alot of phone calls they admitted what had happened and fixed the marks. They never leaked but kept coming back. I think they fixed them about 3 times. This pool company was not on our list of pools to look at this time. I would keep on to them and ensure they fix the hole properly the 1st time. Good luck. Sonya Re: Is this normal? Perfectly drilled hole in new f/glass po 10Jan 27, 2011 1:42 pm HI, yes we have had them out only last week actually. It was a hole and they patched it up with aqua kneed it (which is what we had used) but they tinted it to be the same colour as our pool, a very good repair job. Can't see anything. Says this fix will last for the lifetime of the pool. He did not say how or why this hole was there, but at least it is fixed and we have it on recored now that there was a hole... just in case there are any further, future issues. Re: Is this normal? Perfectly drilled hole in new f/glass po 11Jan 27, 2011 1:45 pm Wow, that's good! I suppose they did the patching "under water", ie. didn't have to empty the pool up to that point?? BTW, apart from noticing the "evaporation", did you notice any soaking of the soil at all around the pool? My signature is distracting people from my wise posts ... Re: Is this normal? Perfectly drilled hole in new f/glass po 12Jan 27, 2011 2:43 pm The man who came to fix the hole had a scuba tank so could repair it under water. We did not have to empty the pool. The quick drop of water lever in the pool was the indicator .. it was absorbed in the ground soil under the pavers ... lucky our pavers have not sunk. The drop at first was quite slow, but speeded up over a 2 - 3 week period. I think that whatever was sealing the hole, as it disolved the hole got bigger, thus more water loss. Approvals are covered in the cost we are paying to the pool company. The only thing stated in our home build contract for the additional cost is engineering support. … 3 1215 can’t tell from the photo, a tie down rod will be 12mm, is it a steel beam? he should be able to work it out 1 3374 Water this close to the slab edge or under the slab can cause slab heave or subsidence and is potentially a serious problem especially on highly reactive clay soils.
