Browse Forums Pools & Spas 1 Oct 11, 2010 9:54 am Okay, We've signed with Pl@ntation (H3nIey) two weeks ago and are now considering whether we want to add a pool to the build (not through Pl@ntation). So to all you other Queenslanders do you think adding a pool is worthwhile both from an added value and a something to use point of views? Does the no added value still in apply in Brisbane? I can understand that owning a pool in the southern states may not be a great idea but up here most homes seem to have them. Building a Plantation Emperor Q1 at Spring Mountain Estate, Greenbank SE QLD Re: To Pool or Not To Pool, that is the question 4Oct 11, 2010 11:32 am The fact that you're in the Brisbane heat-I'd definately add a pool, HOWEVER....may I recommend that rather than a 'regular' pool perhaps you should consider a 'splash-pool' or a 'plunge-pool'?? That way you have a smaller area to worry about thus less expensive, but still have the means of hopping in & cooling off. Let's face it- how often do we actually get into a pool & swim actual laps?? We usually just want to have a dip or splash around in the one spot to cool off for a while. This is becoming quite the trend in Western Australia-& they look very nice. If you like you could make a feature of it- especially if you have frequent guests to show it off to-perhaps a small water feature that flows into the plunge-pool?? Just a thought. cheers Suzy Re: To Pool or Not To Pool, that is the question 5Oct 11, 2010 1:22 pm Hi, We have an inground fibreglass pool, now almost 20 yrs old, and there have been many times I wished I had not put it in.... - a pool is great while the children still live at home, but even then there comes a time when they don't use it anymore - even when no-one uses it, you must still maintain it and spend money, either on chemicals, or with a salt-water pool, replacing corroded hardware - all types of pool deteriorate, but the inground ones can potentially cost you a lot of money 15-20 yrs down the track - if you don't plan to be there that long, consider that a pool may make the place more saleable to some buyers, but much less so to others, especially if the pool is getting old. It does not add much actual value. Many buyers don't want a pool at all. I wish now I had put in a good quality above-ground pool with deck, originally (in 1991). You can even get these with a deep end, and they can be partially set below ground, especially on a slope. It would now be gone , either through deterioration or intent, and replaced by a native garden full of local birds Cheers - Re: To Pool or Not To Pool, that is the question 6Oct 14, 2010 12:02 pm kodaz, Many people in the southern states will often mention a pool not adding value (sorry guys.. I am originally from NSW BTW ) but in Qld in particular where we are (just around the corner from you - Spring Mountain) a pool is a great idea. Our location in particular: 1. Gets hotter here in summer as you are further from coast. You will notice it although we do get nice breezes being higher up 2. Plenty of room for one... Kids are not up running around shopping centres and more likely to be at home playing in the yard 3. Local pools (apart from neighbours of course) are too far to ride a bike to when its hot. Greenbank School would be the closest. I'd say if it's in your budget then go for it. You will need a pool after driving the ride-on around for 2 hours Ozz Built 36sq Plantation "Retreat" on 4460m2 at Spring Mountain, Qld In Living and landscaping.. >>> ... http://retreatspring.blogspot.com Re: To Pool or Not To Pool, that is the question 7Oct 14, 2010 12:49 pm We were going through the same dilemma quite recently. Our pool hasn't actually started, but we're getting close....and we can't wait. Firstly, a pool CAN add value. It just depends on how smart you are. If you get a lot of quotes and then do a lot of the extra DIY (ie. fencing, tiling, landscaping etc.) you can save alot of money and the pool can add value. When I say DIY, I mean either you doing the work yourself or paying contractors which will still save money. In Brisbane a pool will be a lifesaver and will really make your house feel more inviting, entertaining and also make it feel like your on holidays when you're having a beer next to the pool. I say GO FOR IT. Also...have you started looking around at pools yet? Any idea who you'll be going with? Re: To Pool or Not To Pool, that is the question 9Oct 14, 2010 9:21 pm We have just put in a pool in Sydney. Houses with pools seem to sell pretty well, but hard to say how much value they add. We put in solar heating and used the pool last week for the first tim, although was a bit cold (24 degrees) due to too much cloud. Had a swim when I got home from work today and water was about 27 degrees as was a warm sunny day. I think the solar heating makes a big difference to the Sydney decision as effectively you can use from early October to end of April, possibly longer if it is sunny. Re: To Pool or Not To Pool, that is the question 10Oct 17, 2010 7:45 pm Well I think we've decided to get a smaller pool (around 7x4m) with an attached spa. We're hoping to get something done for around $30k before landscaping. The next question is who do we talk to. We've found environpools.com.au which seem to be priced right but really need to give some people a call. Any suggestions from the world of H1? Building a Plantation Emperor Q1 at Spring Mountain Estate, Greenbank SE QLD Re: To Pool or Not To Pool, that is the question 11Oct 18, 2010 5:56 pm Really no difference in price between a 7x4 or 8x4. We used porpoise pools our came in at $31000 but we our out of the ground by over a meter. It was one of the reasons we bought our current house and we reckon for what it costs to run and maintain its worth it. I estimate on average its $15/week to run ($7 for power, the rest is in topping up the water and chemicals) and it gets used daily. Water temp can be anything from 25 to 33 degrees over the year, I'd spend an hour a week on maintenance (cleaning the salt cell and scooping out leaves along with a vacuum of the bottom, all done with a beer or two in hand. If I'd bought a house without a pool, I wouldn't get one (don't know what you're missing if you don't have it) but do keep in mind that nothing lasts forever so a replacement pump may have to purchased if this one dies so keep that in mind on the maintenance side. Does it add value? I reckon in the tropics it does as its a way to keep cool but if I lived down south I wouldn't have one. I'm off for a swim and an ale...enjoy. Re: To Pool or Not To Pool, that is the question 14Oct 19, 2010 8:43 am kodaz Hi Lou, Any idea what cost your semi out of ground added to a standard build? Kodaz - someone told me before that a semi out-of-ground pool is actually easier for the guys installing it. So if anything, I think it would cut costs....don't hold me to that though. We're getting ours 14cm out-of-ground which isn't much...but need this so the pool/tiles are level with our deck. We didn't get a break down on how much extra it was going to cost as we the had to come out of the ground due to the block.
