Browse Forums Pools & Spas 1 May 16, 2010 11:58 pm Hi All We are in the process of our concrete pool being installed. Our neighbours have expressed (read whinge) their concern about the pool pump noise. Pool pump is not even on site yet. Are they as noisey as pool pumps of ten years ago? Is their anything we can do to keep the noise level down. Cant be bothered with their whinging and would rather fix the problem if there is one. Thanks Caz Re: How loud are new pool pumps 2May 17, 2010 7:13 am I can understand your neighbours concerns. Make sure the pool is insulated I guess. Don't scrimp. One of the reasons we sold our last house was because the girl next door bought a new pool pump and for some reason it caused an echo and vibration noises through the ground and into our property. To the point that it was impossible to lie down in any bedroom and relax when the pool pump was on as the bedrooms were down that side of the hosue. Pool was barely 2 m from the fence and our bedrooms were about 2m our side. Externally though there was no noise!?! It was only a "through the ground" vibration. Something about the way the fibreglass pool was installed perhaps but it was a big factor in driving us out of our home. Re: How loud are new pool pumps 3May 17, 2010 10:03 am I know that some a still loud. They should be built into a sort of an alcove using filled blocks. Ours is going to be blocked in and roofed. Also, run them at midday, that way you wont be disturbing anyone's sleep. http://i998.photobucket.com/albums/af106/NathanKlo/Renovations/IMAG0056_800x479.jpg Re: How loud are new pool pumps 4May 17, 2010 7:14 pm Nathan SteelFab I know that some a still loud. More expensive to use power in the middle of the day and my neighbour insisted on running them for 2 x of time periods each day. 5am to 11am and 5pm to 11 pm. Our pool builder said that a pool filter size should be calculated on a total water turnaround time of 2 hours. Your neighbour is working his for 6!! In any case, if they are a shift worker, do the nice thing and just change the timer around to a more appropriate time. Thanks Caz Hi Caz, It is your legal obligation besides, to make sure your neighbours are not disturbed by your luxury equipment (yes, yes, I have a pool too). There will be prescribed times in your State outside which you cannot operate the pump. Do remember your neighbours can cause you all kinds of trouble if you thoughtlessly put them right offside. All you have to do, while you are spending $20K or more on a pool, is to install the pump on a rubber sound isolation mat, and put a sound isolation box over it. You can buy these ready made. Cheers Re: How loud are new pool pumps 7May 22, 2010 6:16 pm kexkez provided they aren't shift workers. If it's going to be near a neighbours fence then have a sound cover installed Re: How loud are new pool pumps 8May 22, 2010 9:52 pm Hi All Thanks heaps for your replies. Thanks for the idea of the isolation mat. Where do you get one? Bunnings? We have had the piping re done on the pump and moved it. Its now down about 10 steps and surrounded by concrete on all sides except for where the steps are. Above is the concrete balcony, so i think it should be pretty sound proof. Thanks Caz Re: How loud are new pool pumps 9May 22, 2010 10:22 pm "We have had the piping re done on the pump and moved it." This is mainly a problem with the pool companies IMO. They always want to install the pump where it's closest and easiest for them. In our case they wanted to run the pipes to the back fence because it was the closest and easiest location but we had to stand our ground with them (it cost us extra $$$$) but we were adamant they had to put bring it back about 10m from the back fence and to the side where we dont have neighbours. They weren't happy but they aren't the ones who will have to deal with it if a neighbour complains. I dont think you'll have any problems since yours is surrounded in concrete Re: How loud are new pool pumps 11May 27, 2010 7:34 pm We installed a new intelliflo pump for the same reason. We wanted to use the pump during off peak times, but noise was restricting us to do so. Off peak being around 2am till 6am. The intelliflo is a variable speed, which means we can operate it at more efficient and very quiet speeds (currently 2000rpm turns over the pool in several hours). The big upside compared to the old pump is power savings. The old waterco pump consumed a whooping 2.5kw. The new pentair, at 2000rpm is only 500W and literally whisper quiet. We now operate at off peak times with no complaints. The only draw back, is that they are around $1000 US each, but at this rate will pay for itself in a year or so. viewtopic.php?f=17&t=29835 steve Ain't that the truth! We used to have a tile roof and had it replaced with colorbond and suddenly everything throughout the entire house sounds louder! 4 6687 The last home I lived in didn't have a pool and when i went to sell it the agents were not happy, even telling me to put one in to sell the place.
