Browse Forums Kitchen Splashbacks 1 Jun 19, 2014 12:34 pm Hi there, Was hoping for two cents worth of advice with regards to kitchen splashback colours. I have selected the colour scheme below for my kitchen Lower cabinets: Laminex Baikal Overhead cabinets: Laminex Brushed Nickel Bench: Essastone French Black The design is loosely based on this; Some other details - I'm going for spotted gum floors and I would LOVE a blue splashback (a royal blue or even navy) but I'm not sure if it would work. Would love your thoughts! Thanks Re: Glass Splashback to Match these Cabinets - Photos Inc. 2Jun 20, 2014 4:44 pm I would actually grab a floor sample and start playing around with the glass samples. You might prefer to go neutral? Will you use blue as a feature/accent colour in your living area? I quite like the darker blues with the sparkle! I love the bright blue in that pic but sitting on my couch right now (I have that colour in cushions and vases etc around me) I think it would be too much and I'd rather go neutral. All personal preference and also how much area you have to fill. The darker blue that you like wouldn't be in your face so much and stand out so would be similar to a neutral. Your dark bench top and dark overheads are the only thing that would make me say go light! You found any pics of dark splashbacks with dark bench and overheads? Would be good to see! Is the back of your island going to be baikal? Hopefully a colour expert can chime in Re: Glass Splashback to Match these Cabinets - Photos Inc. 3Jun 20, 2014 5:06 pm I would consider the floors too. The colour palate you have picked will work with most colours, it's a very easy to work with. Splashbacks are such a personal taste item, go with what you like best and take samples with you to the splash back place. I reckon navy would work perfectly with those colours, but it will be really dark with the over heads. Is this what you're aiming for? Royal blue would possibly work if you could get one that also works with spotted gum - although this may be tricky, I'm not convinced the pictured sample would work for example. The only concern with navy is the overall effect on your kitchen. How much natural light do you get? What kind of lighting will you have? These are all critical in any kitchen, but especially if you are considering such a dark palate. It may be worth getting 3D drawings done for you so you can see if you like it. Have you considered a lighter blue? Or what about tiles which will have different levels of colour and highlights through them if you get the right ones? Re: Glass Splashback to Match these Cabinets - Photos Inc. 4Jun 23, 2014 11:17 am Thanks for the tips. I went to A Splash of Glass and GlassKote on Saturday and got some ideas. I took heaps of photos, I'll post the top contenders when I get home Re: Glass Splashback to Match these Cabinets - Photos Inc. 5Jun 25, 2014 10:23 am Ok, I have a lot of photos. They all start to look the same after a while too. All feedback is welcome! I'd go with something neutral. I personally don't like the blue. But, hey, like everyone else has said, it's a very personal choice. I will have to go ahead and correct a few assumptions though. I'm not single, though strictly speaking this is 'my' house. My partner quite likes blue as well, I do like to involve him in the decision making process! As for resale, I don't think I'd ever sell it. Rent, sure maybe. I can't say where I'll be in 5 years or 10 years time. However, the goal is to expand my property portfolio. Plus, I'll keep that house for as long as mum and dad are next door. I've mulled over it a little more and I've come to the conclusion that kitchens will date regardless. In 2030 we'll all be saying 'oh that kitchen is SO 2010'. I'm sure people thought their 70s kitchens would be great forever! I think if I wanted to go safe, I would have done white on white on white like so many others do. The great thing about the glass companies is that I don't need to make a choice until measure and quote time. They bring a whole stack of 500x300mm samples to place against your cupboards so you can make an informed decision. If I grow tired of the colour, it's not the end of the world. $1500 later and the problem is solved. Re: Glass Splashback to Match these Cabinets - Photos Inc. 8Jun 27, 2014 9:40 am We're going white on white on white Our builder wouldn't do our splash back without joins so we'll do it after handover. Have you decided which company you're going with? I think balkai has quite warm tones in it and I actually think it clashes with the blue. I think the combination that clashes least is the "bright silver" above because it seems to be a touch warmer and more in line with the warmth of balkai. Just my humble opinion and we're all different. If you changed balkai to something cooler it might work better. Ohhh what about a smokey mirror splashback. Build thread: viewtopic.php?f=31&t=65085 Re: Glass Splashback to Match these Cabinets - Photos Inc. 10Jun 27, 2014 7:18 pm If you want blue, go with blue or you'll be disappointed. I agree with EmyN the Baikal is an issue with the blue, the palate doesn't quite work. If you adjust the Baikal to a cooler white, I think it would work a lot better. The Baikal almost needs to be adjusted with the top few pics too, maybe experiment with other samples and notice how warmer colours vs cooler colours completely change the overall look. Even if you were to sell the house, a blue splash back shouldn't put people off if they love the house. Pitchers are easy to make over & most people know that when buying. Have fun! There wasn't much difference in the quotes I received from both A Splash of Glass and GlassKote. I guess it depends on the colour I choose and who provided it. EmyN I also don't like the blue. I appreciate it You've given me a lot to think about. I'm changing my external colour scheme, so it might prudent to make these changes at the same time. No point bleeding money through multiple variations. Charlston01 If you want blue, go with blue or you'll be disappointed. Thanks for your advice. I'll have to look into replacing baikal with another colour. Hopefully it's not too late. Re: Glass Splashback to Match these Cabinets - Photos Inc. 12Jul 04, 2014 4:44 pm My vote, if airing on the conservative side, would be Dulux Squid's ink Quality is like buying oats. If you want good, fresh oats, you'll pay a fair price. However,if you can be satisfied with the oats that have already been through the horse, that comes a little cheaper. Re: Glass Splashback to Match these Cabinets - Photos Inc. 13Jul 06, 2014 12:56 pm I paid a visit to the Laminex Group showroom yesterday and chatted to a very helpful colour consultant. She gave me the confidence to go bold! So I'll be picking a blue, but I won't make the choice until installation time. She advised that a bold splashback needs a simpler surroundings. The bench in itself is a feature, then the splashback is also a feature. Feature overhead cupboards on top of this would be overkill. So I'm sticking to just the one colour for the cabinets and that colour is Baikal. I know a few people suggested picking something else, but the colour consultant talked me into keeping it. She showed me that it was part of a grey pallet, perhaps these photos were deceptive in showing a warmth in the colour. She also suggested that over a larger area Baikal would look much whiter. So there you have it. Cheers for the input everyone. I'll be sure to post pictures of the final product when the time comes. Re: Glass Splashback to Match these Cabinets - Photos Inc. 15Jul 09, 2014 1:31 pm Oh thank you! The second-last one is nice. I'm going for a darker, deeper shade of blue, but it's always nice to see how others have done it. You can really use anything you want the main consideration would be how it looks once painted/finished - or the look you want. Cabinetmakers use MDF because its cheap… 2 9960 Thanks mate. Yeah good points! Leaning towards Option 3 to get a bit extra space in the cabinets but not going too crazy high (and expensive). Would require a mini… 13 39728 |
